V5 Compressor Shaft Seal...practical for a home mechanic to replace?

Mach5 on Sat August 19, 2006 1:50 PM User is offline

Year: 1996
Make: Chevrolet
Model: Cavalier
Engine Size: 2.2L
Refrigerant Type: R134a

My 1996 Cavalier's V5 compressor has a bad shaft seal. Is the shaft seal something that is practical for the home mechanic to replace? I have plenty of mechanical aptitude as I restore old cars for a hobby, but I don't have any of the special tools needed to work on the compressor. I have done A/C work before, but it was pretty much remove and replace. If the shaft seal needs replacement it seems like a waste to replace the whole compressor. I would be willing to invest in the tools as long as they aren't too expensive. Does the Mastercool 91269 tool set have ALL of the tools needed to do this job? The compressor tool chart I saw linked from this site (somewhere) showed some tools from the 91270 DA6 tool set that might be needed. Does the clutch, etc. come apart fairly easily?

Also, is there any shaft prep work recommended?

I have no leass then about 10 ten tools I use- several of them are home made-- I do those shaft seals on J-cars (Cavalier) without removing rhe compressor from the engine- did a '96 and a 2000 this week. The clurch puller/installer is essential- I then use an awl to yank out the snap ring- then a shaft seal puller tool to get the shaft seal out- then a dental pick to pull out the o-ring- then I clean the interior with alcohol wipes- then I install the new o-ring- then I put the shaft seal protector tool over the shaft threads, then I use the same shaftseal puler tool to mount and twist the new seal into place- after oiling the teflon and o-ring surfaces- then I use snap ring pliers to put the new snap ring in- then I use the clutch installer to re-install the clutch to .020" and then put the plasric panel back- evacuate- add dye/oil mix and recharge to spec- takes about a half an hour total= once you've done a hundred or so............good luck and you're right- it is much cheaper than a new compressor..........

The number one A/C diagnostic tool there is- is to know how much refrigerant is in the system- this can only be done by recovering and weighing the refrigerant!!
Just a thought.... 65% of A/C failures in my 3200 car diagnostic database (GM vehicles) are due to loss of refrigerant due to a leak......

What brand of clutch puller/installer, etc. do you use? Kent-Moore? Mastercool? I wanted to get the tools squared away first...I hate getting halfway through a job and finding out I need a special tool that will take 3 days to get shipped to me.

Thanks for the reply.

91212 remover is shown as being for a metric thread, while 90458 installer is for a coarse thread. I'm guessing the V5 has metric threads...so I should use the 91213 installer, right? What seal remover & seal protector is needed? Thanks again.

The installer uses basically the same threads on most of GM since it screws on the shaft that the nut was on. The clutch plate comes metric, which is what you need, and usually the older A6 and R4 compressors use the course threads. I'll have to find the numbers for the seal remover and shaft seal protector later.. But use the numbers I gave you for your compressor. I know it works, I do them a couple times a week now...

PS: If you're not going to buy them, you can usually rent the hub remover/installer tools from autozone. They won't have the seal remover though..

Thanks for the reply.

That is the boat I am in . Took me all week to figure out the remover tool I need is the 90486 . Most of the adds say it is for the ceramic seal , which I do not have , I have the lip seal on a 1991 R4 .

Well , I finally found an add that said it also works on the lip seal .

I rented the clutch plate remover / installer kit from a local parts store .

A little plastic / nylon seal protector came with the seal kit I also bought locally ( seal , o-ring , protector and snap ring ) .

Ordered the 90486 yesterday , Friday . So I will not be able to finish up on the compressor , until it comes in . Maybe , next weekend ? Weather permitting ?

God bless
Wyr
