Year: 1997
Make: chevy
Model: tahoe
Engine Size: 5.7
Refrigerant Type: r134
Ambient Temp: 90
Pressure Low: 20
Pressure High: 105
Country of Origin: United States

hello i'm a newbie and would like to fix my a/c. I have vacuum pump and gauges.
my system has dye in it. I see dye in orifice tube, switch at drier and the valve leak. I assume they leak because when i unscrew caps i could here refrig. leaking. Is the switch at drier a replacement part at Napa and how do you remove it? Any help would be appreciated.
Oh the system works great when I put about 2 cans every 3 weeks. The front gets down to 60 and the rear to 50.

If you are adding that much refrigerant every few weeks you have a good size leak. Have you attempted to trace down the leak or just refill when you think it is needed? Switch is a replaceable item.

What does the belly of the compressor look like? is it clean as a whistle- or oily?

-------------------------
The number one A/C diagnostic tool there is- is to know how much refrigerant is in the system- this can only be done by recovering and weighing the refrigerant!!
Just a thought.... 65% of A/C failures in my 3200 car diagnostic database (GM vehicles) are due to loss of refrigerant due to a leak......

i'm still trying to find the leak. Had to buy evaporator because when i tried to loosed the fittings the whole line turned and there went the line. I need a compressor it is full of dye. what do you recommend for compressor and where can i get one.

Your leak is at the compressor if it is oily/greasy/full of dye-- too bad on the evaporator- I learned very early on - not to mess with joints that will not separate- to change that evap- you are looking at a dash pull- a pretty big job......

If you have to replace the compressor I would suggest going with the Sanden replacement on this one.

I'm going to double check in the morning. But I believe you will need to add oil to that compressor. There also should be some information in the box about oil type.

Tim,
just curious, is the Sanden compressor better than the Seltec/Valeo one you carry? For my 98 Chevy truck with the same compressor, everyone recommended the Seltec compressor which is the one I bought. Thanks.

It's a matter of personal prefference..I wouldn't say one is better than the other..both are better than the GM.. I bought and used the Seltec on my own 97 Jimmy, and am very happy with it..You'll like it...

50 ounces of refrigerant??? A dual air suburban takes 57, but single air Tahoe should be 30 to 32 I believe??? Does yours have dual air??

OK, I see it's a dual air Tahoe.... You need another 7 ounces at kleast..Be sure your clutch fan is operating properly too.. Spry a mist of water on the condenser and see if the high side pressure drops like a stone..If it does, you have air flow problems..If it falls gradually, that is normal...

Seems as if the system is undercharged...specs list 60oz refrigerant and 11oz of lube. Check the A/C decal on your vehicle for the correct amount of lube and refrigerant.
Seems as if more and more compressors are being shipped with lubricant.......and very few seem willing to drain and verify......!!!
Spoke with a customer some time ago.....seems his customer, the installer, was having some serious compressor issues.....noisy at start up.....of course the compressor was being blamed....what else.......suggested that the supplier check the amount of lubricant within this 'so called' pre lubed compressor......wooohooo.......only about 1 1/2 oz was removed from the unit......
Always suggest to drain the compressor...insure how much lubricant is in the unit and then to add back the correct type and amount of lubricant. Never wanted to let someone I did not know control my repair......failing to verify the amount of lubricant and quality is allowing someone else (an assembly line person) to be an active participant in my repair.......never happen!!!!
To quote someone who was here before......"JUST MY $0.02 WORTH."
