Painted condenser

Dave in Texas on Fri August 17, 2007 10:33 AM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 1981
Make: Ford
Model: PU
Refrigerant Type: R-12
Ambient Temp: NA
Pressure Low: NA
Pressure High: NA
Country of Origin: United States

I had my old Ford truck painted back in Mar '07. Today I noticed the bottom 3"s of the condenser has a coat of paint on it because the air intakes in the lower radiator body panel were not blocked off. I'm thinking I should get this paint off, but not quite sure what a good method would be? OR, is this even a problem with the lower 3" painted?

I do not like painted condensers. 3 inches is not enough to worry about unless you have pressure issues. Which cleaning 3 inches of paint off the condenser is not going to help anyway. You lose a small amount of performance but not much with that amount painted.

What does the rest of the truck look like, and why black in Texas? Wouldn't think very much of a painter that put a three inch strip of black paint on the windshield or on your upholstery, body shops have masking materials to only apply the paint to the intended surfaces. If they painted the edge of the hood, it has to be opened, did they also get a lot of overspray all over the engine? What about the edgings of the moldings? Ideally, for a first class job, anything that shouldn't be painted on the body surfaces should be removed first.

Believe your condenser is aluminum that requires a lot of prep work before the final color can be applied or it will all chip off, but knowing Murphy's law, that will probably stick and the body paint will chip off first. But shouldn't have been painted in the first place, that is poor workmanship. Have no idea what kind of body shop you went to, how much you paid, but just have the feeling you are going to have more problems.

Painting a vehicle is a lot of work, gave up on the final coats years ago, as just don't have a proper paint booth, but a guy can save a lot of money by doing a good share of the prep work, and when put back together, you know the proper hardware was used in lieu of drywall screws.

Hmmm, a case of precoffee syndrome, somehow read " I had my old Ford truck painted back" as " I had my old Ford truck painted black", don't be concerned about me, cured after having my coffee.

Original water based Zip-Stripe will get rid of that paint, but have to mask off the area so you don't take off other paint and just rinse it off with a water hose. Or just leave it.
