hELP WIHT R-12 RECHARGE ON ACCORD

RB on Thu August 23, 2007 8:56 AM User is offline

Year: 1990
Make: HONDA
Model: ACCORD LX
Refrigerant Type: R-12

My A/c works and then doesn't..cool air and cold it comes and goes, bubbles in the site glass. I have one can of r-12 left..last charge was three years ago. Where is the low side..port? I assume I charge it there while the system is running. I have no gages to check pressure.

If not mistaken, the low side service port is on the suction line just before the manifold of the compressor. Look down between the radiatior/fan assembly and the compressor and it should be there. Be sure to add refrigerant only as a vapor.
Good luck!

Thanks for the rely. I did see one port kind of next to the radiator down low and forward of the compressor, right on the front of the engine compartment. It's the only one I can find.

Note on the canister where the sight glass is the tube that is marked "IN" is the tube that has the port I can find, the one forward of the compressor and next to the radiator down low and it has a red cap on it. . Shouldn't that be the high side since it's marked IN??? I think should keep looking any more hints as to where it is on a 90 accord??

Thanks,

It has to be on the suction side, so follow the line "from" the firewall (evaporator) to the compressor. That is the suction side.. Sould go straight to the compressor and the low side port has to be on that line or the compressor itself on that side..Look closely, it's there...

If anyone cares..I found it..it's on the other side of the engine right next to the battery. It's got a white cap on it..totally on the other side of the engine from the compressor. I am good to go now..I think. Start her up let the engine warm up, turn on the a/c to high and hook up my can of r-12..let's hope it works...I'll let it run until the site glass looks clear or the can runs out!!!

Unless someone has some other advice??? I'll do it tomorrow and give you guys time to respond.

Just make sure that the service port you found is on the suction line..Line from firewall to compressor..if it's not, that ain't it...Doesn't matter where in the engine compartment it is, as long as it's on the "suction" side and you're sure it's a refrigerant line. (one end goes to the compressor, the other to the firewall (evaporator)...Just make sure...!!

I think you have the right one. There should be two lines to the evaporator and the low side is the larger diameter one. The one on the recevier is definitely the high side. Just for confusion, there are some cars with three or more ports.

One more thing to think about before tapping that can though, you said the cold comes and goes. There could be another problem making the compressor drop out when it shouldn't. It is normal to see bubbles in the sight glass after the compressor stops. So make sure the compressor is running all the time while you watch the sight glass.

Got her done..one can did the trick. It took a while for the can to empty almost 10 minutes..but bubbles gone and it's cold again!!!! So on the 90 accord the low side is next to the battery just in front of the radiator.
