Jeep Cherokee AC fittings location

300ZxRacer on Fri August 24, 2007 6:58 PM User is offline

Year: 1994
Make: Jeep
Model: Cherokee Sport
Engine Size: 4.0
Refrigerant Type: R-12

The freon in my 1994 Jeep Cherokee Sport finally leaked out, I'm the original owner.
Bought a AC conversion kit from the parts store with new fittings, oil and freon.
So I have a couple of questions.

I cannot find the freon ports in this Jeep, I've seen the ports on the Grand Cherokee
and the Cherokee is different. I can see the big and small hoses but no fittings on them
to add freon. So where are the ports on this model ? I see ports next to the compressor
itself, the ports are on a T shaped adapter with 2 caps on each port and the small and large
hose run into each adapter. So is this where freon is added ?

Do I need to flush the system or not ? Seems to be some confusion after reading different posts
on other forums, some say no need to because the new oils are compatible others say flash it.
Seems like flushing it is the right choice, but some arguments say some flushes are not good
and cause problems. So which flush is the best ?
Thanks.

First, are you sure it's an R12 system? It should have a tag under the hood telling you. "Most" 1994 model year went to R134a.. One exception I do know of was the 94 cavalier. Early 94 was R12, and later R134a.. Once you find out, post back and we can get into more detail. But, if you want the system to run properly, change the drier, expansion valve, and yes, flush the system of the old mineral oil (If it is R12) You can check out Ackits.com for retrofit adaptors, BVA Auto 100 ester oil if you are converting it, or double end capped PAG if it is R134a. Also nylog assembly lube, O ring kit, drier and expansion valve.. Do it right and you'll do it once....
Tips and FAQ page if retrofitting You'll find vac/charge procedures, flush procedures etc right there.. Ask the guys at Ackits.com for information on "Hecat" flush materials.. Best around... Hope this helps..

Yes it has an R-12 certificate from Chrysler on top of the compressor.
Please elaborate on the isolation valves mentioned too.

I looked over the system once again before posting, I see to black caps,
I removed one to find a threaded port, so this must be the right location
just never touched the caps before. The high and low hoses run to these
ports where the T adapters for each line meet at compressor. Odd design since
this is a 94 Jeep, guess they saved money because I can see no reason not to upgrade
except money. Plenty of room in the engine bay.

I'll look for Hecat flush. Also I find it irresponsible of inter-dynanics to sell these kits
with instructions suggesting their 134a is compatible with older oils and the instructions
do not mention anything about flushing. They should know better.
Thanks Chick!!

I want to be sure that you have isolation valves, so if you can post a pic of the top of your compressor, it will confirm this..

Found this pic on the board..JJM has a good one too, but I can't find it..First cup of coffee, so still not funtioning well...

I have those ports/valves, however, mine are butted up against the backside of the compressor.
Never this setup before, even though it does not matter where they are located, the 1994 Cherokee
has plenty of room for hoses. I borrowed a recovery system from a friend, he loves free freon. I have
no use for it. I benefit by using the flush system built into the unit.

Glad you found pictures, I was going to upload some pics but I've been away on
business. Thank you, very helpful!!
