How Much Oil?

RADROB on Wed October 10, 2007 4:06 AM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 1996
Make: Jeep
Model: Cherokee
Engine Size: 2.5
Refrigerant Type: r-134a
Ambient Temp: 75
Country of Origin: United States

Can anyone tell me how much oil to add after losing all my r134a. My drier sprung a leak and I have replaced it and want to know how much oil to add before evacuating the system. The leak happened when the a/c was off if that matters. I know the system holds 7.75 ounces of PAG 100 oil and 32 ounces of r-134a. Any help is appreciated.

Probably little or none came out the leak but there is always oil trapped in the drier, when you put a new one on it will be dry so you need to replace that oil. If you still have the old drier, drill a hole in the bottom and drain it. Measure how much oil comes out, that's how much to put back (plus a little more since it's not going to completely drain out). Or there should be a generic spec for how much oil the drier holds.

Thanks MK378. Unfortunately all of my coolant leaked out at the bottom of the drier so if there was any oil in there it might have leaked out as well. I do see oil at the bottom on the front valance or spoiler inside the front grill. It doesn't seem to be that much oil and I haven't yet taken off the old drier and it is not dripping so hopefully the desicant at the bottom is keeping the oil from coming out. Where would I find the spec on how much oil the drier retains? Thanks again,
Rob

If you are just changing the drier, add back between 2 to 3 ounces. Really no way to know how much has been lost over the time it was leaking without totally flushing the system and adding back the total amount.. But you "should be safe" with 2 to 3 ounces...A quess at best though..
