Oder coming from dash vents

ron in charleston on Thu October 18, 2007 6:49 PM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 1992
Make: Mercedes
Model: 300TE
Engine Size: 3/L
Refrigerant Type: R134a
Country of Origin: United States

Car is 1992 300TE

Oder occurred suddenly. Hard to describe, wife said she thought something was burning. It made her eyes water.

A/C and heat work fine.

Not sure what it is or what is causing it. Do not think it's coolant or R134a, but what else could it be?

Have it checked of course, can be anything from anti-freeze, to a dead rodent and the possiblity that something is burning..That would make me check fast....

Could be something as simple as mold or fungus growing on the evap core. This is not an uncommon problem, esp in high humidity areas such as yours. There are several companies that market a fungicide to aid in the elimination of this growth. Check with site sponsor...they have a product from SuperCool that works very well or check local suppliers.
Follow the instructions and it should help with the problem. Not sure if the instructions state this or not....but allow the evap core to dry over nite prior to using the material....the water caught up in the cooling fins may result in a weakening of the chemicals.
Also there is a in line control module that wires in series with the blower to operate the blower motor for several minutes after shut down to aid in drying the evap after operations.
Good luck!!!!

If you smell it only when the climate control system is on, it could very possibly be the blower motor over heating.

You are on the right track. I checked that and the wiper motor. It was the wiper motor which was burning up because the wiper transmission has lost it timing.
