Hoses

RogerL on Sat January 26, 2008 8:32 PM User is offline

Year: 1074
Make: BMW
Model: 2002

My sons are resoring a 1972 BMW 2002. It still runs R-12. It holds for a while and cools fine for a while. We got halogen screamers up and down the hoses and one of them already has a hose-barb splice. I am sure that they are shot and we pulled the gas back out. They are 5/16 and 1/2 ID's. All but 2 connections are hose clamp. Does anybody have a favorite source on hoses, upgrade crimp hoses, or even on the stainless hoses for this car? Thanks a lot. Roger

You can contact the friendly folks at Ackits.com and ask them if they can rebuild your hoses with "Barrier" hose. They can give you the details on shipping to them, and turn around time to get them back to you. Now is the time before the summer rush to have them done.. new barrier hose will be fine for both R12 and R134a. I would also get a price on the other things you'll need, like drier, O rings etc...Do it right and you'll do it once.. You can't beat their prices...

I have been through their website a couple of times but their earliest listing for BMW is mid-80's.

Chick means they can rebuild YOUR hoses, or make hoses to fit.

That is correct, as Cussboy said, you can ship them your "complete" hose assemblies, they can rebuild them exactly as they were when new, using the more modern Barrier hoses. They may even be able to match up the drier with one in stock. It would be hard to list parts for every car made, but if anyone can get the "right" parts for your car, its " AMA"......

Roger:

The reason you can't find much on that system is that it was a dealer installed item. It may even be a complete aftermarket unit.

There is nothing wrong with a high quality hose clamp - in fact they can be better than some of GM's crappy crimps. You can replace the original hose with barrier hose & cross bolt clamps easily enough - just takes some detail work. I covered that in This Thread with pictures.

AMA sells barrier hose by the foot Barrier Hose Selection

Personally I would just use cross bolt clamps on the OEM nipples with barrier hose. If you really want to go with crimp fittings, AMA sells the Crimp Tool for about 190 bucks, and can sell you any fitting on this 65 page document..

Good luck with your project.
