96 Ford Cobra component question

Travis on Wed March 05, 2008 8:17 PM User is offlineView users profile

There is a AC line coming from the high pressure side of the compressor to the condensor. The line has a cylindrical object in it, about 4 inches tall and 2 inches in diameter. I'm assuming that this is some sort of AC filter/muffler? Here is a picture. The photo was taken from the top looking down, and it's the object at the bottom center of the picture. If I were to get a custom line made without this part, would the AC work?

Thanks
Travis

Sorry guys, you need to right click the little box where the photo should be and select 'view picture'.

You would be fine if the muffler was removed.

Thanks Tim, I actually tried to call you about this earlier but you guys had already closed. Is there a chance that this big loop of an AC line might have the orfice tube in it somewhere?

I'm installing a turbo kit and this ac line is in the way. It's funny, each end of the line where one side connects to the condensor and the other side connects near the compressor are only about 8 inches away, but there is about a 3 foot loop of line between them that contains the muffler, the high pressure switch, and the high pressure port. I'm going to try to find a 'local' shop that can make me a line without the muffler, but with the pressure switch and service port that will eliminate this mess. In the meantime I'm going to dig into the service manual and figure out where the orfice tube is.

Thanks!
Travis

Quick look seems to show the OT in the evap.

Figured it out, the orfice tube is not in this line. I think a skilled ac shop with the proper tools and training could easily make me the line that I need.

I assume that as far as servicing goes after the modified line, I'd just have to figure out how many ounces of r134 the removed section of line held, compare it to how many ounces of r134 the new line holds and go from there?

Thanks!

Tim, if I removed the line and drove the car around with the both open ends tightly taped off and/or capped, would I be risking hurting anything? I could remove the line, cut off each end and reinstall each end with the tubing pinched off, if that makes sense.

Thanks
Travis

All depends on how well you cap things off. I would not be driving around for any extended period of time!

Tim, I did some more figuring and I can relocate the service port and the pressure sensor to the line that comes off of the condensor. If I gave you a measurement, would you guys be able to make me a peice of flexable line with Ford springloc connections on each end?

Thanks
Travis

Honestly I hate making up lines over the phone or via the internet. But if you would like to give it a try talk with Jack and see if he will make one up for you. He has been out sick all week and I'm not sure if he will be in the rest of the week.

I understand Tim. I could probably make you the line out of a peice of copper and send it to you, and all you'd have to do is copy it. Would that help? Could you make it a flexable line or would it have to be solid? If it's flex, It seems like I could just give you the length that I need.

Thanks
Travis

Yes we can make lines using barrier hose. Need to know which fitting/angle are needed. As stated give Jack a call as he is in today.
