1994 Voyager A/C not cold enough

Scout3 on Mon May 12, 2008 4:47 PM User is offline

Year: 1994
Make: Plymouth
Model: Voyager
Engine Size: 3.0
Refrigerant Type: 134
Ambient Temp: 85
Pressure Low: 35
Pressure High: 230
Country of Origin: United States

Just found and joined this forum. This is a great site. My original problem with my 1994 plymouth 3.0 van was the a/c was not cooling well. Did the stupid thing and just added a can of freon, no help. After investigating I found the electric fan was bad and replaced it. I was worried I had too much freon so purged and vacuumed. Left for 10 minutes and no leaks. vacuumed for 45 minutes to remove moisture. Charged with three 12oz cans. Low side at 35psi High side at 230psi. Outside temp 85 degrees. The lowest the a/c will get is 48-50 degrees. While it is comfortable, I was expecting better. Do I have a problem? Any suggestions. Thanks for any help.

I guess it's front air only? Pressure seems a little high for that ambienbt..if they were taken with the fan running, normal if the fan was off at the time... Check to see that the fan is turning in the right way, sucking air thru the condenser.. Clean the condenser of leaves, dirt oil etc, also the area between the condenser and radiator. Did you change the drier when you re-charged it?? Check the sight glass on top of the drier. Hard to see, and small, but it's there...

I did not change the drier. The system had not been opened but it is the original drier. Maybe I should change it. I also found the heater hoses were pretty warm. I thought maybe the water valve was bad, but took it out and it works fine.

check the sight glass, you could also be a couple ounces low..The sight glass is small and usually has paint over it, so clean it off, should not have bubbles in it with factory refrigerant..Return line to the compressor should be cold.. And yes, be sure the heat is not blending in with the evap air..Hope this helps..
