Leak

jameshobbs on Mon June 09, 2008 12:08 AM User is offline

Year: 1995
Make: Chevy
Model: S-10
Engine Size: 2.2 4cyl
Refrigerant Type: 134
Ambient Temp: 92
Pressure Low: 27 - 30
Pressure High: 250-260
Country of Origin: United States

Hi guys, got a leaker. Filled it last year, lasted a week max. Never got it back to me until today. I new it had a leak so I did not pull a vacuum on it just added some oil with the dye in it I had gotten from Tim last year and put 134 behind it to get it in the system. Drove it around a little cooling 50 ish in this 90 + heat.
Got back pulled out my handy-dandy black light kit I got from Tim. Around the back of the compressor were the lines come in and out there is a little muffler the weld is leaking were the line comes into it. It has to hoses and the muffler made to it .Both hoses are pretty long. Tim do you have that hose assy ? There is a little dye under the compressor on one of the lines leading from the muffler. ACKITS lists that compressor as a V5 LARGE CASE.
I have herd you guys talk about " belly leaker's " are the V-5 bad to leak at the case O-ring ? That is were I see a little dye on that hose under it but I think it is blowing over from the muffler leak. I was going to replace the lines with the muffler, Rec. drier and O-tube pull a deep vacuum on it and add a little oil and charge it. But if the V-5 is bad to leak should I put a reman compressor for Tim on it while I have it down ? I'm like you guys I hate to do a job twice . But it is my pastor truck and if the V-5 is not bad to leak. Should I just try the hose and stuff first ??

As all ways thats so much for helping this weekender's AC boy out.

Thanks , Randy

Use a mirror and see if you can look under the read case at the control valve. Many leak from there. If so a new O ring will stop that..Yes, some leak from the belly O rings, but should be quite evident if it is.. Here's a pic of where the control valve is.. It should be in the 6 o'clock position when mounted...

A belly leaker whould look a lot like this, although this one was extreme...

Thanks Chick , will do.
If I do not see a case leak do you think I should replace the control valve O-ring for farts and grins while I am replacing the hose assy. ?

I'd suspect the shaft seal more than anything else- look for oily/greasy oil sling on the hood liner- and nearby components- as well as a greasy clutch plate--they older they are, the more prone they are to leaking at the shaft seal...

The number one A/C diagnostic tool there is- is to know how much refrigerant is in the system- this can only be done by recovering and weighing the refrigerant!!
Just a thought.... 65% of A/C failures in my 3200 car diagnostic database (GM vehicles) are due to loss of refrigerant due to a leak......

Got order in from AMA "thanks Jack" hose assy. was 90 bucks cheaper then Chey. dealer, fit like a glove ! replaced all the o-rings used the Nylog on all conn. replace o-tube and dryer. added two 1 1/2 oz of PAG 150 with dye. Pulled 30 in vacuum held System calls for 1lb 14oz of 134 started truck added some almost like I had to force feed 134 to it could only get 4 oz out of my 30lb tank. Thought something was wrong grabbed a 12oz can started putting it in still really slow about taking it. That V-5 is a odd beast it never cycled ' I know it will not" But it was like a valve in side the V-5 was cycling I could here it.
Reading 30 on the low maybe 125 on the high outside temp 75 duct temp 60ish. Still would not take 134 took it for a ride around the block. Started adding again started taking it a little better low side 27 high 205 inside duct 40ish. I will drive it around some tomorrow in the heat of the day. see what inside temp I get,
I do not have a warm fuzzy for the V-5 acting that way? It is quite as a mouse no clutch sound much at all. Just a little uneasy about it the way the high side was low and would not take 134 like most do you guys see V-5 act that way??

As always thanks for ALL your help for this weekend AC warrior

You have to have the full system amount in there..If you do, leave it be, if not you need to "fully" charge it. If the low side is lower than the can pressure, it has to go in, maybe the connections aren't tight?
