mineral oil amount

Year: 1972
Make: chev
Model: chevelle
Engine Size: 350
Refrigerant Type: r12

Was tired of old ac parts and the ac constantly giving problems so I bought all new parts and putting them in now. I think my cars system takes 12 oz of oil. I was only able to dump 1 oz out of the old compressor. I am aslo replacing the evaporator. How much oil should I put in the compressor to start out and where else and how much should I add. Do I need to blow the lines out? I had already cleaned the whole system out this year and the correct amount of oil was added.

Should be an A6 compressor, there is a bolt on the side, and that is the sump. Add the oil there.. Should be 11 or 12 ounces, don't remember off hand, any that you can't get in there, add to the drier..condenser, evap...But fill the sump..

So I shouldnt just pour it into the holes on the top of the compressor?

Another possible issue...I just blew the line out with compressed air that goes into the condensor. A dust cloud of brownish dust came out. My ac guy just said that was fairly normal in a system that has been down and we can clean it out. The system has worked for 7 yrs and when it went to the paint shop this year a leak occured and i lost my freon. Is the condensor stillll ok?Im just wondering if this is what has been causing my mystery problems wit the ac.

Brown dust could be just that, brown rust dust, or it could be a blown desiccant from a previous failure hard to say, did it run at one times with the low side going into a vacuum? But yes, flush the system, add new drier make sure the system is clean, and dry before charging..Yes, oil thru the sump plug..You can a little to the suction port to wet the pistons, but most goes into the sump..

The condensor was bought new 7 yrs ago. Its always run fine but after getting it out of the body shop the evap had a leak or at least the leak got alot worse and I lost my freon. When I recharged the system starting giving problems. The evap started freezing up on me. Figured there was a blockage somewhere even though low and high temps seemed fine. I dont mind spending the money on a new condensor but if the dust is normal from sitting several months I would rather not. I had the same issue 7 yrs ago when i kept getting blockages in the exp valve. I ended up replacing the very old condensor and it worked fine ever cince. Of course that condensor was sitting in the car for yrs prior to when i got it with a dead system
