Leak around the sightglass!

jackhild on Sat August 23, 2008 11:55 PM User is offline

Year: 1992
Make: Toyota
Model: Celica
Engine Size: 2.2l
Refrigerant Type: R12

I just replaced the receiver dryer to get the A/c back in service on this 92 Celica. Added 4 oz of oil to the new receiver. Pulled a long vacuum, don't have a micron gauge, but 29"+ on my gauge set. It held nicely for 30 min. I charged in 24 oz (2 cans) of my precious R12. Pressures were pretty nice, center vent temp 45* idling. I was pleased as punch, until I noticed that around the sightglass there is a seal that is leaking! I can see very small bubbles boiling out. Not between the aluminum block and the receiver, but around the actual glass where it is set into the connection block. I didn't see it till I was putting the cap on the service port. On this car, that block is brazed to a long tube that crosses the entire front of the car. No body has this part!

Any suggestions on what to do?

Is there a little "rim" nut that holds the sight glass window in, that can be tightened? On some, there's (from bottom) O-ring, window, retainer nut.

This one looks like the glass is pressed in to a gasket.

Recover the R-12 now, before any more leaks out. You can probably buy the part from a Toyota dealer or find one in a junkyard. The screw-together ones have an internal hex in the ring that holds the sight glass in, it appears yours is not one of those.
