Honda Accord insufficient cooling

rschmitt2 on Sat August 30, 2008 5:31 PM User is offline

Year: 97
Make: Honda
Model: Accord
Engine Size: 2.2
Refrigerant Type: R134a
Ambient Temp: 87
Pressure Low: 23
Pressure High: 265
Country of Origin: United States

Getting some cooling, but not very good (about 69 degrees at the center outlet). Low side is 23, high side is 265 at 2000RPM, with ambient temp of 87. The high side seems like it is a bit too high(?) so I was afraid to put more freon in. Any thoughts?

An attempt to charge a vehicle simply by adding refrigerant (topping off) is such an inexact procedure. If you wish to know exactly if the system is fully charged, then and only then can a complete diagnosis of the vehicle be completed, have the system recovered, and then recharge to factory spec's using the correct equipment.
As for the pressures...not knowing exactly where in the US you are located and the effect of humidity on performance, then your pressures could be quite low. It is quite possible for this vehicle to produce high side pressures that exceed 330 psi with this ambient temp and a humidity factor of only 20%. Max pressures for this system at an ambient of 90degrees/20% humidity are 37 low/325 high. To determine if the system is operating correctly....it must be known how much refrigerant is in the system. It is also important to know how much lube is in the system. This comes into effect when the system may have been serviced in the past since many techs tend to like to add an ounce or two to a service. The specs of this and other modern systems is so very critical to proper recharge rates.
Topping Off is not an acceptable method to determine system performance.
Good Luck!!!

What was the original problem? did you change any parts, like the compressor or drier? Or did you just try to top the system off? we need to know. Yes, the high side is to high for that car. Are you sure the cooling fan is working? If parts were changed, did you pull a deep vacuum and charge the factory amount back into the system?? Let us know..

My daughter bought the car recently, so I really don't know if any service was done to the AC. We are in North Carolina, and it is was very humid when I took the readings. The cooling fan is working. I can evacuate and recharge if that is the best approach.

I would evac/recharge to factory amount. Be sure to pull a deep vacuum before charging, any air in the system will affect cooling..Hope this helps..
