Which oil to use?

300zxer on Sat November 22, 2008 9:10 AM User is offline

Year: 1994
Make: Mercedes
Model: E420
Engine Size: 4.2 L
Refrigerant Type: R134a

I have been away from working on my A/C systems for a while, so I have forgotten about the uses of some of my leftover supplies. I have an 8 oz bottle of refrigerant oil from AMA labeled Texaco Capella HFC-100 Synthetic Refrigeration Oil. Is it compatible with R134a systems. I also have a bottle of the red nylog, is it OK to use it on the joints of R134a system. I know the blue is the most compatible, but I don't know if the red can be used on both. I am about to replace the evaporator, expansion valve and drier on my 1994 Mercedes (an R134a system). I plan to use the red nylog on any joints I open and the manual calls for adding 3 cc of oil to the drier any time it is changed, so I plan to use the Texaco oil if it is compatible.

The Texaco oil you have is an excellent "ester" oil, but unless you flush the system I would stick with the original PAG 46 your denso compressor calls for. E-mail the guys at ackits.com and they can give you the price along with an O ring kit for your car. If you open any fittings, the O ring should be changed. Also, I use the red Nylog for everything, doubt it would make a difference for you.. Blue is for basting penguins... hope this helps..

Ester or PAG also doesn't store well. It is extremely sensitive to picking up water from the air, and that water will bind tightly to the oil molecules and affect its lubricating properties. If that old bottle has been opened before and then stored for years, you should not use it. Buy some new oil instead even if the job does call for ester 100. I have not heard of any factory R-134a systems using ester, it is great for conversions though.

There is actually one or two car companies that do use ester. Don't know the quality though, along with "Western Star" trucks..(just from my personal knowledge) I guess they want to keep the industry as closely bound as they can.. I did have a list of all the car makers and the oil they used. I was surprised to see one or two that used ester, (europe or Sweden maybe?)have to try to find that.. But I do agree, if the can was opened, don't risk it, use new "double end capped" pag 46.. Some things you only want to do once... hope this helps..

The container I have of the Texaco oil was never opened, but I will get the PAG 46 to make sure I use something compatible with the original oil. The parts and o rings I have I got from the guys at ACkits. Thanks for the input.

Red is for coffee.

Blue is for AC work.
