Year: 1990
Make: Chevy
Model: Corvette
Engine Size: 5.7
Refrigerant Type: R-12
Country of Origin: United States

Hello,

Well i have been putting off working on my car A/C for awhile. Thought i had a leak, so i put the gages on it and it did not have much, would not show any pressure on gage set but it made a hiss as i pushed in on the valve stem. So i put a vac. on it, let it run for about 45 min went down to 29.9 and is holding there..! Lucky me. Well i do not think this system has been broken into before so i think it was org. charge from 1990. Just normal leakage over the years.

So i have 3 cans of R-12 So should i replace the accum. and the orifice tube and orings on what i remove or just add a charge to it. You guys have helped me in the past with wifes neon and she loves you guys for it! ( if this was not a family board i would post pic's ) so any help that you can give me and point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Going all the way down to zero very likely means there's a leak. You should leak check it under pressure first before committing three cans of R-12. Some things like shaft seals leak under pressure but not vacuum. A few ounces of R-134a can be used for leak tests; do not run the compressor.

As far as what to check/replace, I agree just check the o-tube, finding it clean you know the compressor isn't torn up inside. Replace the accumulator.

So the 134 what about the oil in it , will it effect the system mixing with the oil from the R-12 i will not run the a/c system.

You don't want to run the system with R134a! Only allow the pressure in the can to flow into the system for leak checking . If you start the a/c and pull R134a into the system you will contaminate it and a complete flush, drier and oil change will be needed.

Just to add, if you're going to use R134a for testing, and there is nothing wrong with that, be sure to use just PURE R134a, and not any cans with oil or other additives in it.. Most sold in the chain stores have all kinds of stuff that you DON'T want in the system... Just buy a can or two of virgin R134a.. As Tim said, don't run the car with it, just use it to find the leak, then fix it and remove the R134a and pull a deep vacuum before recharging with your R12.. hope this helps..

I would give Tim a call, they have great prices on remans, and "possible" new for your car, and you can't beat thier prices on accumulators or anything else you'll need.. But check it out first, might be normal loss if it's never been serviced... Hope this helps..

True but it is a good sign that it is holding for as long as it has! I would add some refrigerant and leak check with an electronic leak detector.
