How much oil where?

70monte on Fri April 03, 2009 4:43 PM User is offline

Year: 1998
Make: Chevrolet
Model: K3500
Engine Size: 7.4L
Refrigerant Type: 134a
Country of Origin: United States

I just ordered a new Seltec/Valeo compressor, condensor, and accumulator from AMA to fix the system on my 98 Chevy K3500 truck. How much oil do I need to put in each component? This system holds 8 ounces of oil. I did this same repair two years ago on my 98 K1500 truck but do not remember how much oil I put everywhere. Thanks.

Oil can be added directly into the suction port on the compressor. Just put the cap back on when installing it so it does not drain out during installation.

I know that I can add oil to the compressor but I was wanting to know how many ounces of oil do I need to add to the compressor and accumulator and if I need to add any to the new condensor and how much. I don't know how many ounces the compressor will hold and I don't want to add too much and end up damaging it. Which side of the compressor is the suction side, I forgot?. Thanks.

PS. I also forgot how many ounces of refrigerant this system takes. Its a Reg. cab truck.

To insure proper lubrication during charging, it might pay to put four ounces in the compressor, and four in the accumulator.. I suggest draining the shipping oil if it comes with oil, and adding fresh oil to the system..hope this helps.

Humm, without looking at it I forget.. But just hold it near the truck, and the one the accumulator line goes to is the low side, I think it's the one on the left looking towards the clutch..

While it's indeed preferable to add the oil through the suction port, if you add it through the discharge port it would be the end of the world either. As long as you get the total oil charge in the system, with a good amount in the compressor at initial startup, you'll be fine.

The bigger challenge is making the oil stay in the compressor while manuevering it in place, especially when working from underneath the vehicle... when that stuff drips out onto your face, it really doesn't taste very good - especially PAG.

Thanks for the info guys. Luckily on this truck, the compressor is on top of the engine so its easy to replace.
