High Side Gauge Fluttering

Bhutch on Fri June 05, 2009 3:24 PM User is offline

Year: 1985
Make: Mercedes Benz
Model: 300SD
Refrigerant Type: R134a
Ambient Temp: 85F
Pressure Low: 27
Pressure High: 250
Country of Origin: United States

Just intalled new compressor, drier and TXV. Filled with 2.5 lbs of R134. I get normal cooling and pressure readings (27 low, 250 high @1500RPM) but I noticed the high side needle was fluttering. Could I have a faulty reed valve but still get normal pressure readings?

Are you using a quality gauge set. Where did you get your replacement compressor? When you say new that means new or a new rebuilt unit?

The compressor was a new unit and I was reading the pressure from the MasterCool machine that the mechanic who charged the system used.

All the Mastercool machines I have sold or seen have anti flutter gauges. If it is cooling I would inform your supplier of your concerns and see what they have to say. Without seeing the "flutter" on the gauges it's hard to tell if there is anything wrong. You will get a little movement in the high side gauge but it should be more of a steady movement.
