Compressor weak?

mitchedo on Wed June 24, 2009 10:52 PM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 1999
Make: GMC
Model: K3500
Engine Size: 6.5 TD
Refrigerant Type: R-134
Ambient Temp: 90
Pressure Low: 65
Pressure High: 225

So, I buys a new condenser and radiator, and put 'em in Saturday. Changed the condenser cuz old one was mangled by bugs and I got a killer deal on it. Today I goes out and evacuate the system for 45 minutes, held for 15 minutes, ran in a half pound of 134 from a 30lb cylinder and sniffed the two joints I opened for leaks (new O-rings with Nylog, of course). All was well so I ran in 134 from my tank until it wouldn't take more. Started truck and tried to run in more but it would only take a total of 1.5 lbs out of 2. The low side just wouldn't suck down lower than 60-65, even at 1500-2000 rpm. Yes, the clutch was engaged.

I pulled Mom's 97 Odyssey up and it charged right up, pulling down to
Methinks I need a new compressor. Tim was so good to me with my Suburban disaster, I thought I'd see about getting more stuff from him, even though I could get it locally and be done by tomorrow.

Or might it be something else? The radiator and condenser are brand-new -- zero miles. The fan is brand new Duramax composite 9-blade with heavy duty clutch, also brand new with a few hundred miles. Oil cooler is also nearly new, 2000 miles and clean. Trans cooler is also clean. Shroud is in place, I feel excellent "suction" at the condenser; I bet it'd suck an 8x10 sheet of paper up tight.

So, Tim -- I think I need a compressor, a drier, a set of GM O-rings and a pair of new spring valves for the service ports. I have about 7oz of PAG 150 left from when I put the condenser in Saturday. What else should I get? Which compressor should I get? How's the Sanden compare to the other new one you sell (Delphi?)? I want a new one, not a rebuild. I want one that will last; I want one that will cool my crew cab. There's a Delphi on there now. AC worked, but I've never driven the truck when the temp was over 90. The AC did seem a little weak -- no funny noises. 138,000 miles on the truck; I presume the compressor is original.

almost forgot. My Yellow Jacket 134 gauges seem to need new O-rings in the quick connects. I stuck in a small one I had in an Autozone kit, but are there particular ones I should use?

I am an idiot.

When Tim mentioned that there were two different orifice tubes depending on whether it was condenser or evaporator mounted, I got to thinking I did a stupid thing. When I was putting the engine in, I recalled wondering why they had insulated the liquid line between the condenser and the firewall. I never could see where it went into the firewall (behind too much junk), and I was in a hurry.

Bottom line. The O-tube was sitting in the old condenser leaning up against the garage wall. I bopped down to Autozone and purchased one of those fancy variable O-tubes to give it a try. I think I probably should have taken the time to replace the compressor anyway. The old O-tube had quite a bit of black flecks stuck on it. ...but I wanted to drive the truck to Dad's cabin this weekend, so I just slapped it back together. It works much better with an orifice tube.

I am an idiot.

Mitch - you're not an idiot - these systems are all different. Think of what you (and us) have learned from this. Glad it's working better.

Doug no worries, I bumped the CPU fan wire plug while swapping out a DVD burner yesterday. No big deal except this CPU is in a tight spot to attached all the cables and plugs so I was saying the same thing when I was pulling out the CPU for a second time yesterday.

While I would still like to sell you that Sanden! Thanks for send a few dollars in support anyway! It is appreciated and helps to keep the forum alive for the future.
