bad compressor or ex. valve?

cb1rider on Tue July 21, 2009 9:28 PM User is offline

Year: 1991
Make: volkswagen
Model: vanagon
Engine Size: 2.1
Refrigerant Type: r134a
Ambient Temp: 90
Pressure Low: 85
Pressure High: 85
Country of Origin: United States

Static pressures are equal and in line for ambient temp. Compressor kicks in. High and low side drop slightly and then stabilize at 85psi for both high and low. Ambient temp. aprox. 90. No cold air. Is this a bad compressor or possibly a bad expansion valve? Compressor is quiet and can be turned by hand when not running it is a Sanden 709

Could use a little more information, when was it last working? what has been done to the system that you know of, any service recently, if so what? Static pressure of 85 with an ambient of 90 looks like a low charge, bad gauge set or bad compressor, nut more information will help us help you..

I retro fit to 134 2 years ago. The compressor was good. Changed oil to PAG and replaced receiver dryer. Evacuated and charged. Worked fine. I believe it was working a couple weeks ago. Can the Sanden compressors fail but still seem to operate? ie. not frozen no loud noises etc.

If the system is just low shouldn't I be getting at least some increase in high side pressure when the compressor is running and I increase engine speed?

You may have a leak, and you need to make sure the compressor is coming on.. It would pay to evacuate, recharge to see if the compressor is working, could be a bad compressor, broken shaft or sheered key (not sure if yours has a key) meaning the outside is turning, but not the inside etc..
