Year: 1967
Make: dodge
Model: d200 pickup
Engine Size: 318
Refrigerant Type: R134a
Ambient Temp: 100
Pressure Low: 25
Pressure High: 220
Country of Origin: United States

A friend of mine got this truck for cheap. It has a under dash evap and a Tecumpseh(sp?) compressor.

The system was empty and it was missing the belt and adjuster pully.

We shot it up with nitrogen, found a hose that had a hole rubbed in it so we fixed that. No other leaks found.

Pulled the compressor off to dump the mineral oil out. Put about an inch of Ester oil in it and put the compressor back on. Found a pully and a belt in our junk corner. Put those on.

I found a new universal drier in our parts room and the drier has a high pressure switch mounted on it..What a score!

Put that on and vacummed it for 30 minutes. Held vacuum for 30 minutes so I vacummed it another 15 minutes.

Shot 20oz of R134a into it. Felt good but no cold line back to the compressor and the high side was a little low.

Compressor sounded ok...No noises, good and quiet.

I added 4 oz more R134a. High side came up to 210-220, low side 25. Thing was blowing ice!!! Brrrrrrrr it was cold!!!!

Cold line back to the compressor.

Were all smiles at this point.

Let it run about 10 minutes the suddenly the compressor locked up tight belt smoking so we shut it down.

Bummer..... So close.

Well if you have to buy a compressor. Buy a 5033 adapter plate and go with a Seltec or Sanden.

Too bad you did not take the extra 15 minutes to flush the compressor & add back the proper oil level. Sure, the shaft seal might have leaked - but it is still cheap to replace.

This part?

"dump the mineral oil out. Put about an inch of Ester oil in it and put the compressor back on."

I did not see a flush in that. If the oil level was in spec, it might have lived. You need around 16 ounces in that sump for a fresh startup, and a dipstick to check it with after you run it for a while. Of course it may have swallowed something nasty that was in the old system...

You have been around this site for a while, are you really surprised a "death kit" style conversion crapped out in less than an hour?

there are just some compressors that just cannot use any other oil than the orignal mineral oil.
