Weld-on fitting questions

MikeC5 on Sat August 29, 2009 6:24 PM User is offlineView users profile

I'm looking at the weld on fittings such as "#6 WELD-ON BEADLOCK STEM OD FIT" on ACkits and have a couple of questions. Are these available in metric tube sizes (10 mm, 15 mm specifically) and do they have to be welded or is it possible to braze them onto your existing steel tubing?

No metric and brazing is fine for steel. With the right rod MAP gas can be used on alum.

Does brazing steel require higher temperatures?

Brazing temperatures are varied depending on the alloy and material thicknesses of each job; usually a practiced art.

It is possible to braze typical A/C lines using a MAPP gas torch from a hardware store. It is like soldering only you get the metal much hotter. Some practice will be required. Aluminum is especially tricky because it needs to be heated nearly to the melting point of the aluminum before the rod will melt.

Don't try to simply butt two tubes the same size end to end and braze it. One of the tubes needs to be expanded or contracted so they fit closely over each other. Or you can use a tube of a larger size as a coupler and braze both sides, like how copper pipes are joined.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've sweated copper joints before. I just didn't know soldering/brazing could be done on ferrous metals. What would I use to solder/braze steel tubes? I have silver solder (used on potable copper joints)...
