Help with Conversion of R-12 to R-134

dobroman2001 on Tue January 12, 2010 5:02 PM User is offline

Year: 1976
Make: Chevy
Model: Corvette
Engine Size: 350
Country of Origin: United States

I want to make the change from the old R-12 system to the new R-134 system. The setup in the car is the old R4 Compressor with a VIR drier. My plan was to replace the VIR with a VIR Eliminator kit and also replace the Condensor with the R-134 friendly type. Does this sound like the correct steps?

Thanks,
Tab

You have a good starting point, but you will also have to rebuild all of your rubber lines with 134a barrier hose and flush your evaporator. Also be sure to install a HPCO switch for proper protection with 134a refrigerant.

Thanks for the reply, the Eliminator Kit (from NOSTALGIC Air parts) comes with a HPCO Switch. I am having a new hose built as soon as I can get these parts in place.... I just wanted to make sure I was on the right path!!

Are you sure it is a HPCO not a Low pressure switch for cycling the system?

No, not sure.... I will check that. Thanks for the heads up. From the picture it looked like a switch so I assumed (ouch!!).. it may be a Low Pressure switch.

Agreed, especially with the $95.00 dollar price tag for a few fittings and accumulator.

Sorry, but one thing I failed to mention is the original VIR is shot... this is sorta why I opted to move to R-134..

With the R4 compressor you will be fine. If you had the A-6 compressor then I would have to agree with the rest of the forum post.

Hi Jack, so you are saying to go with the VIR Eliminator Drier and Condenser?

JACK ADAMS on Wed January 13, 2010 10:38 AM User is offline

You should be fine, the system may take a bit longer to cool down but we are talking about a Corvette system. Did you check into the that switch yet?

I sent them an email and have not heard back yet..... I was wondering if I really needed the new Condenser. Sounds like you think that I do..

just heard back... here's what they said:

The kit includes a cycling switch. It does not include a high pressure switch.

You will need to use a PFC to work with the 134a refrigerant as well as the HPCO switch.
