what compressor??

boatmoter on Tue April 20, 2010 8:59 PM User is offline

Year: 1980
Make: ford
Model: LTD
Engine Size: 5.0
Refrigerant Type: R134-A
Ambient Temp: 96
Pressure Low: 32
Pressure High: 232
Country of Origin: United States

compressor blows ice cubes, even at idle,no complaints there,I have this LTD power train in a small 87 ranger,I need to know if theres a reasonably priced smaller compressor that will bolt in place and put out as well as the OE compressor that will not take as much HP to turn it, lot of drag on this one,Im also running a parallel flow condenser, like to get one that has no more drag on it than one on a 4 cyl toyota.. Thanks Guy's, hot over here in FL, and this rig only gets 15 MPG, reason for needing more efficient compressor

e-mail the guys at Ackits.com telling them your concerns.. They can hook you up with a Sanden or Seltic compressor and even help with the new lines since you're already using a parallel flow condenser..

What happens to your mpg number when you switch off the AC?

EPA says you should get 15 city 22 mpg on the highway.

Always seem to do much better then what they claim.

A 5.0 V-8, stuffed in a Ranger pick-up; the more fun you have with it, the less mileage you get.

It's an A6 so unless you are willing to swap or fab some brackets it's best to stick with the A6. Even swapping to a Seltec or Sanden it's not going to improve the gas mileage all the much in my opinion.

It will work but a couple HP is not really going to make a big difference in gas mileage with the weight of that car and the motor.

Keeping a vehicle in good tune and driving sanely are just about the only ways to cheat the oil companies and government for the huge road tax they charge. Since I watch my fuel economy with a close eye, have to go to decimal points to see any difference between switching on the AC or not. What really kills economy is creeping on the Dan Ryan at 2 mph, driving on real hilly roads, city traffic where you are spending most of your time waiting for a red light to change even though not another vehicle in sight, and the direction of the wind.

Wind really makes a difference in the motorhome, with the cruise set at 55 mph, a 20 mph tailwind is like driving at 35 mph, but a headwind is like driving at 75 mph. Also in flying, a 50 mph headwind at 130 mph indicated airspeed, your ground speed is only 80 mph. Ha, flew a Champ once with a 40 mph headwind, all the cars on the road were passing me up.

People that have complained about poor fuel economy either had their systems way overcharge or were filthy, really don't get very good cooling with a plugged up condenser and the high pressures skyrocket. About the same thing with a ton of debris on the evaporator, needed a shovel for some. Boatmotors pressures look pretty good at 96*F so don't feel that is his problem.

Best fuel economy occurs at cruise where the engine is running at peak torque, a smaller displacement engine working hard can actually get poorer fuel economy than a larger engine just purring along.

But the poster never specified the difference in fuel economy with the AC on or off, so not even sure if that is his problem.

thanks guy's,got a lot of helpful info, just emailed ackits.com with question, and the 15 MPG is driving it like a senior, it has a 345 axle ratio in it so the MPG going to be low,but wanted to try to squeeze all I can out of it without changing the gear, still like to pull my boat and keep up with the asian vehicles (with the boat on of course)

Just about any vehicle I looked at with adjustable initial timing, was way off, think your Ford is all pre electronic spark advance control, and Ford tends to lean on venturi vacuum has the only form of advance. With electronic advance, have to disable that advance by pulling a plug someplace before checking ignition timing. Most drastic was my kids' 90 T Bird where after changing plugs and wires, that kind of stuff was only getting 17 mpg, that increased to 31 mpg. Was getting like 22 mpg on the highway on my 92 DeVille it was over 10* off, if I can hold it at 55 mph, that increased to 30 mpg. List goes on, but something sure worth checking.

I avoid ethanol based fuels, that really kills my fuel economy and our governor lies through his teeth like in my 04 Cavalier, the difference between getting 37 or 28 mpg. If I could hold that Cavalier at 55, using premium ethanol gas, can average 42 mpg. Do that on my business trips, wife doesn't let me drive that slow.
