Is about 25 Degrees good enough cooling?

pippo on Wed May 05, 2010 8:26 PM User is offline

Hi Guys,

87 sunbird, but aftermarket, cooling is 25 deg between intake of blower and vent. I am not happy with this, but maybe I should be. My Voyager does the same as far as temp difference (measured many times). In your opinion (s), is this good/average, or not good enough (mediocre)?

Thanks!

Also, if I go with R12 , willl those venturi vac pumps from Harbor Freight be adequate or best to have a shop vac it out?

Temperature differences between ambient and vent vary. Best procedure it to insure that the system is properly charged. This can only be accomplished with a Rec/Rec machine. Attempting to adjust recharge rate with cans of refrigerant and gauges is not an acceptable method.
If system is charged properly, engine cooling system is 100% operational, the difference between evap outlet temp (not vent) and ambient temp should be a min of 20-25 degrees. Considering the age of your vehicle,an aftermarket system, and possible influx of ambient temp air into the air plenum, 25 degrees could be acceptable. A good system should produce temp drops of 30-35 degrees. Max Cool....Doors open....High Blower......Engine @ Idle.

Thanks, ice. I forgot to keep doors open. Why open, though? To stress the system in order to test for extreme capacity? Man, in humid 90 deg FL, its tough to accept 25 deg F cooling.....

The test does, indeed, stress the system. I understand FL temps and humidity. Have lived and worked in WPB for many years.
