Just adding refrigerant isn't going to fix anything if you don't have a set of guage's that can read high and low side pressure. There is no way to diagnose a system based off the low side pressure alone. Your best bet, if you are wanting to do your A/C yourself, is to buy a DIY Starter Kit. It will allow you to monitor your pressures, vaccum, charge and check for leaks. You will however need to find a way to have the system recovered to prevent from losing any freon into the atmosphere. It is a great way to start out with if you want to do it yourself. Your only other alternative is to take it to a shop so they can reclaim the freon in there, tell you how much was in there, and leak check the system so you know where your problem is.
