cold for 1/2 hour then hot

Biesmeyer on Mon June 28, 2010 12:35 AM User is offline

Year: 2003
Make: Mini
Model: Cooper S
Refrigerant Type: 134A
Ambient Temp: 83
Pressure Low: 38
Pressure High: 250
Country of Origin: United States

Drew down system to 29, held, no leaks. Recharged system 14 oz. 134A. System is blowing 52 degree air for about 1/2 hour or twenty miles and then everything goes hot. I can hear compressor kicking in and out, but no cool air. Freezing up or valve? Thanks for any help

With an intermittent problem, all tests need to be done during the time it is not working. Drive until it quits cooling then check under the hood to make sure the compressor is really engaged and turning. If it is not, typically this is the clutch gap. If it is, next check if suction line is cold like normal, warm, or very cold and iced. Cold = refrigeration system OK, possibly air control problem and/or reheating from heater core. Warm = refrigeration problem, need to measure pressures while not working. Iced = probably frosted evaporator.
