Vixen RV - how much oil ?

padgett on Sat July 31, 2010 12:24 PM User is offline

Year: 1986
Make: Vixen
Model: TD21
Engine Size: 2.4
Refrigerant Type: r-12
Country of Origin: United States

Replacing compressor, dryer, o-rings, & oriface tube on Vixen 21TD - engine side is a BMW Behr compressor (bought a 600001 from ACKITS), passenger side is 85 GMC G25 dual air. Keeping R12. Compressor says it contains R12 or R134 oil for single system but not what kind (ester ?) or how much. Also says to add more for dual air.

Question: should I try to dump out to verify that it has oil, how do I tell what kind it is (color?), what kind and how much should I add (system is said to take 11 oz total), and where should I add the extra (compressor or dryer ?) ?

Realize I tend to be a bit AR but last compressor replaced was a decade ago (A6/R12) and still works fine which says something both about my level of experience (good theory, not much practical) and how long things stay around here (usually measured in decades, not years).

We always use extra oil to flush out the shipping oil on manufactured compressors. As for how much to add back. It's always a guess when you do a repair in this manner. Normal single unit systems with short run lines require about 7 ounces of oil for a the total capacity. With no flushing being mentioned. It's a judgment call on how much to put back in. My guess would be 5 ounces but I'm not saying that is the proper amount. Not following the flushing guidelines also voids the manufactures warranty.

Remaned compressor (600001), dryer, O-rings, and orifice tube all purchased from ACKits about a month ago (tend to put money where mouse is). Was hoping someone here would know what kind of oil was in compressor. To drain just invert with caps off or do you need to do something else ?

Thanks for the help. Am ignorant but that is curable.

I would use fresh oil. Drain out the ports unless there is a drain plug on the side of the compressor. Turn the hub a few times helps. Pour some fresh oil in and repeat. Then add back the amount need using fresh oil. This model Bear-Bosch used PAG 46. I would suggest if using R134a to use a DEC PAG 46.

PS: If you are leaving the remain mineral oil in the system. I would use the BVA POE oil we sell.

Got orifice tube out (with difficulty but no debris left behind) and is clean. Going to keep R12 so plan to use mineral oil or POE. Thanks for the opinions.

Does leave the question of does 11oz sound like the right amont of oil (dual air, 21 ft vehicle) and should I put all in the compressor or some (half ?) in the dryer ?
