Posting For A Friend:

About two months ago he started hearing a whirring noise when he we turn the AC on. If he turns the ac off it goes away. He said it feels like its not cooling the cab as well especially at idle, but it has also been extremely hot lately. Today the ambient temp is 96 but it's been 103+ for the last month or so.

I put my gauges on with the truck shut off and got 96psi on the blue hose and 100psi on the red hose.
After we started the truck and the gauges settled in at idle we got the 62 psi and 375psi, the vent temp in the cab at idle was 71.2, the vent temp at 2000rpm was 63.5

Any thoughts or suggestions on where to start?

Thanks
Craig

Spray some water on the condensor, and watch the high side pressure. Post the results.

When I sprayed the water:

Low Side went from 59 to 45

High Side Went from 290 to 200

What does this tell me? What was I checking for by doing that?

Can someone please help me with this?

The water is a quick way to check for poor condensor airflow.

A 30% drop in pressures looks like a filthy condensor, or a bad fan clutch, or possibly a missing fan shroud.

Your original pressure of 375 psi looked pretty bad. What was the ambient temperature when you did the water test?

Does this vehicle cool the cabin well at highway speeds?

I don't recall the exact ambient temp the day of the test, but it was hot about the same in the high 90's or higher. I would guess somewhere between 97-103*

And Yes it seems to cool well at highway speeds.

Then you have a condensor airflow issue.

Check that the fan shroud is in place, and that the condensor air path is clean. Bugs, debris, dirt & oil can cause airflow issues.

The fan clutch is suspect it you have not replaced it within the last 10k miles. You should use OEM clutches, and avoid the "white box" stuff from chain stores.
