Compressor & Fans wont shut OFF

TooMuchAC on Tue July 05, 2011 8:29 PM User is offline

Year: 2002
Make: Saturn
Model: L200
Engine Size: 2.2l
Refrigerant Type: 134a
Ambient Temp: 90f
Country of Origin: United States

I just had my condenser replaced at the dealership and recharged.

When I start my car, the compressor and fans start immediately - thats if the a/c is on or not!

Now I know what you are thinking (1 of 2 things). I replaced the a/c relay yesterday (no change) and its NOT set on defrost. I also replaced my HVAC head unit, to no avail.

The inside blower fan can be completely OFF and the a/c button is NOT pushed when this occurs. The only way for me to get the compressor/fans to shut off is to kick the car into passing gear, forcing it to be kicked off by the PCM's WOT or high RPM override. Then, it will stay off (until the next time I start the car).

Any advice is appreciated!

Not what I'm thinking at all.

Is it possible to scan the vehicle with a scanner that displays B and U codes? Possible there could be a Class 2 network failure. If not, try disconnecting the battery for 60 seconds, then retest.

You might also want to try disconnecting the BCM (mounted on top of the glove box) and seeing if the fans and compressor turn off. A long shot I know, but also try disconnecting the blower control module (mounted on front of HVAC assembly).

Try these and let us know what happens and we can take it from there.

Joe - thanks for the tips.

I have disconnected the battery twice so far, and I replaced the HVAC head unit (it is electronic, not mechanical).

BCM's are common fail points in the L-Series Saturns, so it would be no surprise to me at all if it was the BCM. I do have a friend with a TECH II handheld, but hes very busy and I feel guilty bugging him but I will call him today.

I will go to the car today and pull the BCM power & the blower control plug. Didnt even think of the blower control plug.... Be back soon to report my findings....

A friend with a Tech 2 is a good friend to have.

Keep us updated.
