Compressor Noise

EagleMark on Fri August 26, 2011 10:17 PM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 1995
Make: Buick
Model: Roadmaster Wagon
Engine Size: 5.7L Lt1
Refrigerant Type: 134
Ambient Temp: 85
Pressure Low: 50
Pressure High: 100
Country of Origin: United States

I just got a 1995 Buick Roadmaster Wagon with the LT1. A/C did not work. I put in UV dye and tried starting A/C but wire was disconnected (I guess to stop noise while defrosters on) Plugged it in and added a can of 134 noise got less but still sounds like compressor going out.

I ran it an hour and still blowing cold. Should be able to find leaks if any tomorrow as I have the UV flashlight and goggles.

Anything else I should do or try before I take this compressor out and change it?

Check it for dye in a few days. 50/100 are some odd pressure readings.

What should the presure reading be?

Should I add a couple onces oil? PAG right for 134a? I have a r12 recovery machine and used to R12 but haven't used the equiptment in years...

30-280 with a properly charged system. Depend on ambient of course. Have you lost oil?

No Signs of leaks anywhere. Oil or UV dye.

Would more freon be in order? Would it quite compresor. Just a steady louder than normal compressor noise.

Or should I pull the orifice tube and look for compresor debree?

Just don't know if I should keep trying or start repairs yet.

Still no signs of leaks? Compressor is noisy but A/C is blowing cold... but for how long?

I added an once of PAG oil today and no change in noise. Hooked a can of 134a up to low side running and it would not take anymore. Outside temp in my swamp cooled garage was 77 degree F. Best pressures I got were 27 low side and about 125 high side.

Car has a big fan on a belt and an electric fan. But the electric fan does not come on even at MAX A/C settings. Pretty sure it should be on when A/C is on all the time, but for sure at MAX?

Hooked up the scan tool and went for a ride and it indacated 133 PSI for the A/C. Still cold but never turns off.

Looking into why auxilary electric fan does not come on but that is still not going to quite the noisy compressor. I'd hate to let it fail completly and have a huge mess in the a/C system to clean out...

I'm surprised it is getting cold with the high side that low. Have you been measuring it directly with a gauge or only through the computer?

Typically the fan is programmed to come on at about 240 psi.

Both! I can't beleive it's this cold but never turns off... I used the scan tool after the gauges. spent another hour looking for a leak with UV Glasses and flashlight, nothing.

Compresor is going to have to get changed, I can't stand the noise...

OK, Still cold still noisy... have not checked for leaks... since I did not know condition of system since I just bought it, could it have to much freon? Is there anything else I should try and do to silence the compressor? Orifice tube partial clog?

Or should I just get the new compressor and rebuild the system? Reason I am trying to avoid that is if I can fix something it's cheaper and you have no idea how hard it is to change the A/C compressor on this car! I don't know what a service manual would say but I see 6 to 8 hours...

Reclaim the refrigerant and check the OT. Get things back as close to specs as possible. Then check performance. If you want to replace everything. That's kind of the chain store approach to a repair.

Well no I do not want to replace everything, you got me exactly wrong.

I would much rather fix a working system! But my compresor is noisy, presures are low, air is still cold enough to cool car in sun after parked? Could someone before me loaded this system with liquid freon instead of gas freon?

I can do A/C and have equiptment but no expert. That's why I am giving all the info here. Remembered once a guy filled his A/C with liquid and it was noisy.

I guess my bottom line question is if I exacuate I would have to look at and clean/replace orifice tube. If it was clean would a proper recharge silence my compressor?
