Too hard?? - Pulsing Compressor-then knocking sound

Jeanmarie@bellsouth.net on Mon September 26, 2011 9:55 AM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 2006
Make: Mitsubishi
Model: Lancer

The A/C suddently quit cooling. Took to Sears, had coolant recharged. Pick it up and now it makings the knocking sound, and pulsing of A/C trying to kick on and off. Blows cold though. Could they have damaged the a/c if they had somehow screwed up the recharge by possibly clogging the orifice tube which would cause damage to the compressor? Does that happen or was is it just coincidence?

Sounds like they did not fix the root cause of why it quit cooling, they just added gas. The compressor may have been damaged from lack of lubrication due to running on a low charge.

I know better than to run a/c when the coolant is gone since the lubication would be depleted and would ruin my compressor, which is why I thought just needed coolant. There were no noises, or other symptoms that anything was wrong. They first told me it was the bearings in the fan, but I figured out the noise only came on when the A/C button was pushed. Then they said that the compressor was going out. It made the noise when I first started the car, how would they not even notice that and not say anything???

The compressor may be fine, but you have a leak as well that needs attention. The compressor may be putting tension on the pulley system when engaged thus causing the noise when only the a/c is engaged. The compressor could be bad as well, so find out the problem and then fix it. No need for parts till you know what is wrong...

Thanks, Jack. I feel so vulnerable taking my car anywhere for repair. Strikes me as odd that there was no noise before it quit cooling, then when they recharged it, it starts pulling on the car off and then on again about every 15 seconds, like it is trying to kick on, and also making the noise. Young guy that did the work in the shop first said it was the fan bearings going out, I take it down the road, turn fan off, noise continues with a/c button on only, take it back and then they say the compressor is going out. They are just giving me their best guess ???
