2001 VW Beetle - SD7v16 poor pumping

GM Tech on Thu April 19, 2012 8:23 AM User is offline

Year: 2001
Make: VW
Model: Beetle
Engine Size: 1.8L
Refrigerant Type: 134a
Ambient Temp: 70
Pressure Low: 70
Pressure High: 100

So this pump is not pumping correctly- it is quiet, runs smooth, I've reclaimed and recharge 3 times- adding and subtracting refrigerant just to see if I can make this variable compressor start stroking--seems nothing has helped. Pressures are always near 50-70 suction and 100 or so discharge. So, is my only answer a new or used compressor?

This is my first experience on a VW Sanden compressor failure- just looking to see what others would do in this situation.

Thanks for any input.

The number one A/C diagnostic tool there is- is to know how much refrigerant is in the system- this can only be done by recovering and weighing the refrigerant!!
Just a thought.... 65% of A/C failures in my 3200 car diagnostic database (GM vehicles) are due to loss of refrigerant due to a leak......

Thanks for any input.

Ice-N-Tropics says you can replace the control vale. But it is internal, so a total tear will be needed.

I do have a control valve for this compressor.

Thanks, I suspected that would be the issue---I bought one off a Jetta from my local boneyard for $135 - gained 2 years- and installed it- pressures are now 27 and 150 at 72 ambient-- so It did work--and owner is happy not to spend big bucks for a new one. I did not like the VW way of using allen head screws instead of good ole hex head bolts...was not much fun to change out...
