Crown Victoria Compressor Cycling

brandenc on Fri April 27, 2012 10:28 PM User is offline

Year: 2001
Make: Ford
Model: Crown Victoria
Engine Size: V8
Refrigerant Type: R134
Country of Origin: United States

Im working on getting my ac going and im looking for some direction as to what to try next. The compressor wasnt running so i jumped the low pressure sensor and the compressor turned on. I went and bought a r134 kit with the gauge and loaded the whole can in and now it just cycles on and off. I have some readings on the low pressure port
With compressor off 70psi
with compressor jumped its between 0 to 15 on the gauge
when compressor cycles it turns on at 45psi and turns off around 20

Im wondering what would be the next step and what this information tells me. Do i just need to add more freon or should I be checking for leaks or something else? I can also get the high pressure readings if that helps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It had leaked down to zero, going to leak out again quite rapidly. Find the leak. Don't be tempted to use "stop leak"!

Also don't jump the sensor, that forces the compressor to run dry and is likely to damage it.

How much r-134a does your system require? Did you put enough in?

Chances are, if it has leaked out, there is a leak somewhere and it's going to leak out again. It doesn't sound like enough was put in and or the system is leaking, that is why the pressure is low.

I'd say, turn off the car. Then spray all connectors and parts where the rubber a/c hoses connect up with metal part of the hose with a soapy water. See if anything bubbles. Look for small bubbles too. Spray around the compressor and see if anything stands out.

Next, I'd either get a leak detector or rent one from autozone and run it along the length of the entire system and see what gives off an alarm.

Then go from there
