I have a Nissan pickup that has been acting up for a while. The A/C clutch would often disengage and the A/C would stop cooling all together. I would pop open the hood and take a screwdriver an thump the clutch and it would start cooling again. Now it doesn't matter if you thump it or not, it will not engage. Nissan dealer says its the compressor, local A/C shop says its the clutch. Could a thermistor or clutch relay cause this problem?
Any ideas? The dealer wants $1300 and the A/C shop wants $950 and i think that's a little much.
Need to check the clutch gap, 20 thousandths or less.

the gap is .035, what do you recommend i do next?
Take the clutch plate off, remove shim washers to reduce the gap. This can be done with the system charged.
