Possible Obstruction

Year: 1981
Make: Chevy
Model: C-10
Engine Size: 305
Refrigerant Type: 134
Ambient Temp: 98
Pressure Low: 24-47
Pressure High: 500
Country of Origin: United States

Converted from an r12 system that had leaked out, leak was in the soft lines. I replaced everything except evaporator, condenser, and hard lines. The old OT was not dirty, had some debris but nothing bad. Flushed the evaporator, condenser, and hard lines.

Vacuumed and charged the new system and it cooled somewhat, but after a few days the clutch failed. Had the system evacuated, replace the compressor, vacuumed and I recharged. After a few minutes of running the compressor started making a noise like the bearings were going out. The high side of the evaporator was iced up, but the low side and accumulator was warm.

I took it to the place where I had it evacuated and vacuumed and the tech hooked up a gauge to the low side. The compressor ran the whole time and the pressure on the low side fluctuated from 24-47. He went to hook up the high side and when he pulled the cap the valve blew out and started bleeding 134. He quickly was able to hook up the high side of the gauge and it read 500, even after losing some refrigerant. He evacuated the system again.

He told me that there was an obstruction in the evaporator since the high side line iced up and there was a little bit of cool air coming out of the vents. I pulled out the OT and it was clean but there was quite a bit of oil that came out of the line. I pulled the accumulator and was able to blow nitrogen thru the low side of the evaporator with no problem. I tried to do it from the high side and nothing.

This truck has been in the family since it drove off the lot and this is the first time that the AC system has been worked on. From the research I have done so far, it seems that the evaporator rarely gets obstructed, so what exactly could it be?

Make sure the condenser is cooling properly

Just another brick in the wall

Had a little mule I fed him castor oil and every time he jumped the fence he fertilized the soil

Maybe obstruction is in the condenser.
Please be patient and the pros will reply later with more info.

Any of the Pro's have some input. I am dont know enough about AC systems and I really hate to just throw parts at it until it works.

Tired fan clutch, missing fan shrouds, overcharged with refrigerant or oil, residual flusing agent. Conversions sometimes work optimally with slightly less R-134a than the factory rating for R-12.
