04 lexus ES330.Any known problems?

chris142 on Tue November 13, 2012 5:06 PM User is offline

Country of Origin: United States

This car came to me with a locked up compressor. I removed the compressor from the car. I did not find any metal or burned oil so I pulled the compressor apart. Found nothing unusual. I have no idea why it locked up as everything in the compresor looked fine. Nothing broken, no scored cylinders etc.

So I put a new compressor and condenser/dryer PAG46 etc. Car ran about 400 miles and came back locked up again! Same thing. No metal anywhere in the system and no obvious reason for the compressor to be locked up. So my question is are there any known problems with this model?

Thanks is advance.

No TSB reports.

Denso unit should hold up pretty well. Might check the evap & cond for oil. Might have an issue where the oil is not returning to the compressor. In-line filter used?

No inline filter. The AC was working well when it left and pressures were normal for our 100* day. It's been a month or so and I don't remember all the perticulars. But this is the 2nd compresor and I cant see what caused it to lock up.

Hub look burnt? Was it quick cycling? Fan working correctly?

Yes it came from a well known supplier that my boss uses a lot. It's an actual Denso, not a Chinese knockoff. The fan was working when it left but I cant verify that until I get the new parts are back on the car. Clutch is not burned or excessivly worn and it still had 1.3lbs of R134a in it which is spec.

I'm guessing 2 Flukes in a row.

Maybe go with a China knock off. They seem to hold up just as well at half the cost.

Sent the failed unit back and they checked it out. They said that a piston somehow got out of a cylinder. So that makes 2 failed ones in a row.

Wow, Iceman would know more but sounds a little odd to have pistons coming out of the cylinders.
