Cant figure out how these connectors work

pippo on Mon December 23, 2013 7:25 PM User is offline

People,

have an older set of these:
http://www.thelashop.com/ac-r134a-quick-coupler-connector-adapter-1-4.html?gclid=CMi09cvLx7sCFeHm7AoduC0Auw

And its been a while, but Im looking at them and why isnt the exterior "ring" which snaps down/locks onto the ac fitting on the car springing back and forth?? Man, it must be me cuz the link/photo I attached (for reference only, not that I bought these) shows the springy "sleeve" as "compressed", not in "relaxed" position, which when relaxed, snaps tightly around the ac fitting preventing gas from escaping. What am I not understanding? (seee where it is printed "quick coupler", that sleeve stays "open", it appears, just as on the photo. isnt it supposed to spring shut?? Then you pull it back, against the spring's tension, snap onto the ac fitting on car, hear a little pssssstttt, then it springs shut to seal/snap tight?

Thanks

In the picture, are you referring to the red and blue parts not moving? I have a similar set and they don't move either...until they are pressed onto a fitting. I happened to have a set of r12 conversion fitting I could "play with" to check operation. It is just the way they work. Nothing to worry worry about. I am just glad to see someone besides me thinking about AC right now. Good luck and stay cool.

I bought a can of 134a at w**-mart that had a stop leak, oil, and dye in it. It also had a hose and a gauge, so now I'm an AC pro!

thanks, jag. yes, its dang hot here right now- 85 at peak day time temp, about 100 in a car in the sun!!

I suspected they would work by being "activated" when pressing them on the ac fittings on the car by the gas pressure. Used them many times but never thought about it. Im still mentaly stuck, though, on why they wont spring back/forth just sitting on the bench. Oh well, as long as they work on the car. Cold front tonight, though. may not add gas til next heat wave......lol

I have a set of CPS brand and they are different. You actually have to pull the outer ring back when connecting them but they also have a manual Schrader valve depressor, maybe that why are different.

That type is called an automatic type supposedly safer as they don't allow refrigerant to escape when installed while system is under pressure.

By "that type", do you mean YOUR type, or MINE? Thanks.
