Evap case leaking water like mad inside cab

pippo on Fri March 25, 2016 6:45 PM User is offline

People,

2010 cobalt, water drips about a pint of water , of course it soaks the floor all up. Have to put a small pail to catch the drips, and dump daily. Happened firsdt 2 months ago, during winter when I didnt use ac much of course. Sucked out the water/whatever mold out of the drail tube in engine bay and thought that would fix it. No such thing.

Had to saw out the motor case from bottom of evap case in cab. Rebuilt the motor (it had been soaking in water for a few days). All was well. Now, water again. Geez. Ever heard of this wierd problem on Cobalts? Im ripping my hair out figuring out what the problem is.

Thanks

Did you saw through the drain pan of HVAC case? Creating a leak. Can you see where the drips are from- if at an air seal casing half- then your drain is plugged. if at a crack that you created by sawing, then it needs a new drain pan or sealed really good.

You can test - by forcing condensation by boiling water (old coffee maker) inside cabin (windows up) while running the a/c on recirc mode and high fan, this will create lots of water drips off the evap core and you can explore where it comes from, and what exactly is leaking.

The number one A/C diagnostic tool there is- is to know how much refrigerant is in the system- this can only be done by recovering and weighing the refrigerant!!
Just a thought.... 65% of A/C failures in my 3200 car diagnostic database (GM vehicles) are due to loss of refrigerant due to a leak......

GM, I didnt saw through the case, plenty of room up there for a hack saw tip. I inspected it just to be 100% sure. So, if I have a drain plugged up again, how should one unplug? By wet vac suction at end of tube? Cuz thats what I did so far..........PLEASE HEEEEEEELP!!!!!!!

oH- i CANT SEE WHERE DRIPS ARE FROM CUZ WHEN I REMOVE THE MOTOR, ITS ALL CLEARED UP BY THEN. So hard to diagnose. Is this typical recurring problem with GM cobalts?

I should have mentioned- Even before I sawed around the motor housing to remove it, I had a leak. So, leak was there way before sawing.

This is all I could find:

http://www.tsbsearch.com/Chevrolet/09-01-37-002

Good to know!! So, I should look for the "white plug in evap drain" and "apply sealer to front of dash area"? What does that mean, I mean, 'front of dash area" is so general/vague.............

How do I access white plug? By removing the heat shield around exhaust pipe under car? I think it is "burried" behind heat shield.....

That's what I saw. You may have to use Mitchell1DIY or AlldataDIY to access the full TSB.
