Fuel Cell for 1968 Ranchero?

jbrooks26 on Wed February 23, 2005 1:37 AM User is offline

Anyone know where a guy could pick up a fuel tank for a 68 Ranchero? A friend of mine is looking for one that it reasonably priced. Cheepest one he has been able to find is around $275 US. Thanks,

Josh

Back in 1990 when I purchased my 88 Supra, someone tried to lift the car with a floor jack under the fuel tank, so when I was negotiating on the price, I insisted that the cost of a new tank, discounted price be deducted off the price, would install it myself. The price was 400 bucks, so $275.00 some 15 years later with the buck only worth about as half as much doesn't sound too bad.

I pitch my JC Whitney catalogs, but noted they sell some plastic gas tanks for some trucks, don't know if yours is covered or not. It's hell getting old and remembering how cheap car parts use to be, but back in the 50's to the 70's, gas tanks were made like crap. For the fun of it, tried to knock out that dent in the old Supra tank by using a sledge hammer on a 2 by 2 piece of oak dropped in the fuel sender hole. Couldn't even bulge that dent, is a very heavy tank.

Inflation is killing all of us, none of our pay checks is keeping up with it, heck in the last 20 years the government tells me my home doubled in price so have to pay twice the taxes on it. But not as bad as my brothers and sisters that are paying 3-5 times as much with their homes purchased at about the same time. Sure it looks like they are really making out in the value of their homes, until you deduct what they paid in taxes.

Check out Tom's Bronco Parts. They deal in older Bronco items and even sell the AMA after market a/c system.

Thanks for the input guys. I appreciate it. This kid is still in Highschool, so funds are very limited for him. I think that the plastic cell will probably do nicely for him, and the one that Tim found may work out. Thanks again,

Josh

What's wrong with his old tank? Or is it completely missing? Gas tanks can be repaired, done it many times in the past, have to vacuum it out first and even flush it out with water, not really vacuum it, but use the blower side of a shop vacuum to get rid of all the fumes.

I guess it is rusting very badly inside. He told me that he has been replacing the fuel filter about every 3 months because it is clogging. I told him to fill it with water, cut it in half, and clean it up. Maybe even weld in a new liner. I guess it sounded like too much work. Any other suggestions? Thanks,

Josh

It's difficult to judge without seeing the tank, but typically they rust from the outside in and as long as the outside of the tank feels firm all over, give it a good paint job after thoroughly cleaning the inside, even using good old fashion soap and water, rinse and heat dry. After a good paint job, undercoat, enamel, I like to spray the entire tank with undercoat. They won't rust on the inside of the tank is kept near full. That's an FAA requirement by the way for aircraft to keep moisture out, always top off the tank after a flight.
