Power door lock problem

skullring on Tue October 18, 2005 7:34 PM User is offline

Year: 1995

I have a problem with my power door locks. When you use the door lock button all four doors will lock and then unlock right away. The switch appears to have good continuity so I am thinking it must be the power door lock relay or the wiring. Has anyone had a similar experience or have any insight on this problem? Thanks for your help.

Is this lock system OEM or aftermarket?

It is OEM I just took the drivers side switch panel apart and found where the contacts that control the automatic down feature (where you tap the switch and the window goes all the way down) were shorted together. I cleaned them out and repaired the insulator that separates the contacts. I will put it back in tomorrow and let you know how it goes. The windows and the doors are on the same circuit so hopefully this is my problem. Thanks

Power door locks are certainly independent of the power window circuits even though both switches can be mounted on the same panel. Do you have remote entry besides power door locks? Remote entry adds the relays and electronics, a poor ground or voltage connection here can cause erratic operation. Power door locks are typically just switches, the drivers door is interconnected to the passenger door in case one person tries to unlock the door while the other tries to open them. The switches apply voltage to the actuator motors of one polarity for locking the opposite for unlocking, so pushing the switches together would short out the battery without the interlock.

Sounds to me like your spring center off position is weak and the switch is rebounding or flying back to the unlock position, try working the switch with two fingers in a way it doesn't bounce moving the switch back to neutral in a slowed fashion. Could be the switch needs replacing, if the contacts were fried, the center spring would be fried too.

Did you ever feel like a knucklehead?
My original problem was a power window switch contact that was shorted out. The contacts are mounted close together on two thin strips of copper the contacts had become stuck together and was causing my short. I took the switch apart and cleaned the contacts and bent the copper strips so the contacts had a good gap between them. Problem solved all 4 windows are working but the door locks would still unlock after locking them after some head scratching it occurred to me that I was trying to lock them with the key in the on position (Toyota has the anti-lockout feature where the doors will not lock with the key in the switch.) Thanks for the help Tim and Nick.
