Fuel injection o-rings?

FrankD. on Wed April 19, 2006 12:47 AM User is offline

Year: 1996
Make: Buick
Model: Regal
Engine Size: 3800
Refrigerant Type: 134a
Country of Origin: United States

Does any one have any inside information as to what elastomer compounds AC Delco is using in there fuel injector o-ring replacement kits?
My 96 3800 II motor takes Delco kit # 217-454 and cost over $30.00
A 94 3.8 uses kit # 217-1379 and cost under $15.00 so what gives.
Is GM drastically overcharging for Viton o-rings or is it possible they are a using one of the newer compounds that tolerate more chemicals than Viton?

I do not have the specifics to answer to what compound is used, but maybe this will shed some light.

Viton is a trade name of Dupont and it is also known as Kalrez. It is the most common compound used for automotive fuel applications.

Viton fluoroelastomers are not just one compound but are used to make up many many o-ring compounds. Each one is designed to meet a specific chemical and temperature application. OEM's and the aftermarket are constantly making changes in the specific Viton compound chosen as different fuel additives are put into the available fuels for the masses.

Is this the famous Chris, "Godfather" of MVAC boards? How've you been? I see the domain is still active, though our old hangout is long gone.

It's kind of funny to see you categorized as a "Junior Member."

Hope all is well with you and your family... and hopefully there haven't been any more "fires" which you seem to laugh off so nonchalantly.

All the best...

Joe

It is I... Yes, the domain is still alive, though it's not used much anymore. I miss the old hangout, but, I still get to lurk around on the various A/C sites so everything's good.

Yes, I'm more of a reader than a writer. I never even posted much at the old board. I'm sure I would've been classified as "Junior Member" there too.
Just no way to keep up with Nick, Chick, Nacho, etc... How do they do it? I simply had to answer this post since I have a gajillion of those O-rings I could give the guy. $30 for O-rings! Something had to be done.

Thanks, everything is great. I've been staying out of the fires. We got a new shop. http://www.fixyourcars.com - (our web guy hasn't finished the site yet... ) Notice there are no furnaces at ground level. That makes me feel a wee bit better :-) You can see a few scars in the photo at the page where I'm holding the scanner. (Photo) Arms look much better now though. Less red anyway. I'm really a believer that laughing is good medicine. Along with the Morphine :-) Except for the pain, scars, worried family, denied $264,000 insurance claim, It was a pretty good experience. I was able to get that two weeks paid time off to boot.

Chris,

That was very nice of you to give Frank those O-rings.

Cost me about 15 bucks for a set of injector O-rings for an 85 F150 302 engine at Autozone 2 years ago. Not cheap anywhere you buy them.

P.S. Applying a little motor oil to them makes them easy to insert into manifold and fuel rail.
