MACS

mascas on Sat July 29, 2006 8:24 AM User is offline

Well finally got the class approved to get some of the younger guys certified in 309. My company makes millions, but ask them to spend 2500.00 to save them thousands and its like pulling teeth.
Hopefully this class is good. I don't hardly remember my class. Im going to go and sit through the class and hopefully ask some good questions and learn a little myself....

Just some observations on this, why can't the EPA write their own test but has to depend on several 3rd party sources to issue the certificate?

And why even a test at all, when the only thing that this test is more of an oath that you know what the EPA laws are so they have a piece of paper in their hands that says you can't claim ignorance. Those requesting a 609 should just have to take an oath in my opinion, that way, they really can hang you like the military does if you break it.

Some of these 3rd party tests actually extend the law going overboard on what the EPA regulations are, but don't sweat that, just put down their answer and get your certificate.

Do you need to know anything about repairing or diagnosing an AC system, it's component parts, electronics, etc to pass the 609? Answer is simply no.

So what is the purpose of getting a 609? Put in most basic terms, the privilege of purchasing and using CFC based refrigerants, put in other terms, if you are not using CFC based refrigerants you don't need a 609 except in a couple of states.

Looked over the instructions on the latest death kits and was surprised to see, if you read the warnings like don't run your engine in a closed garage, stick your nose in the cooling fan, touch the discharge line whatever that is, etc. if you get down that far, they finally added a note,"it is illegal to vent refrigerants", so in that one short phrase, you have the 609 contents.

Our technical institutes offer a two year course in HVAC and MVAC, that may be worth something, but they seem to skip over the electronics, a major hang up in the latest MVAC systems.

Feel like the EPA is overstepping their boundaries in getting into safety issues with some refrigerants, safety is the responsibility of other government agencies, should be just their job to control substances that have adverse (known) effects on the environment.

I agree with your statement. However it is a necessary evil. Im not going to stand up and say the EPA rocks but if they say I have to know about the clean air act, montreal protocol, ozone depletion, chlorine poisoning,ect....then my boys got to do it like I did 12 or thirteen years ago. I know the test is simple, and your right the test actually has nothing to do with macs. The class that goes with it does, but is so simple and vague. I want my guys to get their feet wet and get the basics and learn from others the fine tuning. I think the schools are a good thing.Trade schools help in several ways imho.
I know you only get experience by getting your elbows dirty but trade schools are a good thing

Nick, smile buddy I picture you with a frown on your face all the time.

Actually, I am RONTFLMAO when I type stuff like this because these subjects are crazy to start with and seem to be a big joke. It's fun being satirical and guys like Jay Leno and Bill Maurer make big bucks at it by poking fun at the system and the government.

I'm smiling if not laughing my head off.
