Tough Times

TRB on Wed November 01, 2006 8:23 PM User is offlineView users profile

Well after 7 years of Internet service we finally got hit with some CC fraud. Orders all passed the AVS security checks but we now find out the information was stolen from somewhere. They even have the 3 digit code from the back of the card. At this point we have lost $ 5000.00 in product. Not good since we really made very little this past couple of years.

So to say I'm sad at this point is an understatement.

Tim, I know in your business you almost have to take credit cards, but I still refuse to take them dang things, and it always seems that the folks that want to pay with one when I tell them I don't accept them they always come up with the money. I am a small business myself and believe me I can relate to getting burned for $5000.00 I have been waiting for 62 days "today" for $2500.00 someone owes me "Dam my big heart" but there supposed to have an appointment with there bank along with me there in a couple days and the their banker pretty much assured me when he called me the other day they would get the loan so all I can do is Pray. It's a totally different world out there than when I started 30 years ago, back then folks paid there bills before they ate, not now bill's come last but brother I still pay mine before I eat and will always have this old school attitude. I know this don't help much but I am sorry Tim and I know you probably are like me a hard working man just trying to provide for you family and enjoy a little of your life so hopefully a miracle will come into your life and help you out with this issue, I know I still believe in miracles if not I would probably have already checked out.

We have filed reports with the FBI, PD, and both our merchant service and Authorize.net.

Thing is they have stolen some peoples identity. So all the data entered is the correct information even the code on the back of the card. They are not just hitting us these people's cards they are using have large purchase all over every where.

Our first step is to only ship to the confirmed billing address but that creates a headache as many are not home during the day. UPS attempts to deliver 3 times and then send the product back to us. If I don't have a required signature UPS leaves it at the door and people say they never got the items. So its a plain cluster fuck at this point.

They got two of Skye International's distributors for close to $ 20,000. All a/c related items.

Tim,

Did you check your insurance policy? Sometimes insurance policies have these little "goodies" in them, so it couldn't hurt to review your policy and/or contact your broker - don't necessarily take their word something is not covered, sometimes they're idiots. Check specifically under "Property In Transit" and "Computer Related Losses". Could also be covered under "Cash, Securities and Receivables."

I don't know how much business you do, but you may also be able to protect yourself by demanding a physical image of the card and drivers license in question be scanned and e-mailed to you before order processing is complete. If you have this information, it would be very difficult for any C/C processor to deny payment to you. Of course, being too stringent can also slow your business.

You could also consider a payment processing service that insures against fraud... even if the rates are higher.

No matter, sorry to hear about this... especially to such good people...

Joe

I did contact our agent and it does not look like online fraud is covered. I have him looking into an additional policy for these kinds of issues.

A large portion of our business is online sales these days. We have pretty much tried all the different methods in the past and they all have draw backs. Ship only to the billing address and have the packaged signed. This creates a hassle for the customer as most are at work so after 3 attempts UPS ships it back to us. This was the first time something like this has happened. The people committing this fraud had all the information needed to allow these sales to clear the banks AVS system. It was more of an identity theft then CC fraud.

My biggest complaint besides wanting to do bodily harm to those that committed this crime is the way our merchant service (M & I bank) pretty much says its online sale so its all our obligation. They loved collecting anywhere between 1.5 to 4 percent on transactions for the past 9 years making close to 30 thousand a year on these fees. Its a nice racket they have going with all of the online sales being done these days and having no obligation to the merchant.

Thing is your will see these items show up on ebay or craigslist. Then someone will post what a smoking deal they got on ebay.
