The server people blame the programmer and the programmer blames the server.

NickD on Wed January 17, 2007 10:49 AM User is offline

Problems with our freinds at batauto.com.

I would like to take the blame but not the responsibility, ha, always easier to take the blame. The ones that take the responsibility have to fix the problems.

Maybe Tony should check with Tim, Tim doesn't seem to have these problems.

This rancher also has problems:

"The Half-Wit

A man owned a small ranch in New Mexico. The New Mexico Wage & Hour
Dept claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent
out to interview him.

"I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded
the agent.

"Well" replied the rancher, "There's my ranch hand who's been with me
for 3 years. I pay him $600 a week plus free room and board. The cook has
been here for 18 months, and I pay her $500 per week plus free room and
board.

Then there's the half-wit who works here about 18 hours every day and
he does 90% of all the work around here. He makes $10 per week, and I buy
him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night."

"That's the guy I want to talk to --- the half-wit," says the agent.

"You're talking to him," replied the rancher."

This forum software costs more then Tony wants to pay since he really does not make a profit from the BAT site. While this package may not be the best or have lots buzzer and bells. I really have very little trouble with it or our forum in general. I have made some code changes or had someone write a script or two but that is about it. This package is not even supported anymore. If I upgraded I would have to rewrite the vehicle fields again and I don't really want to shell out cash for something that is already working. We don't get the smut issues that other a/c bulletin boards seem to have and even BAT had this happen with the new forum package. Maybe that is why Tony is looking into something else. Running these forums is not a walk in the park!

Just got off the phone with tony and he is having the common it's the other guys fault syndrome. So be patient as he is doing the best he can to resolve this issue. He also uses a rackspace type server. So he is on his own when it comes to issues. So if anyone of the IT experts want to try and give him a hand. I'm sure he would love to hear from you.

Hi guys!!
Figured I would address this post while I am waiting on some info and back ups to get done.

Nick, the problem is that the program Tim uses is not cheap.
The server to run this type of program is fairly expensive too and as Tim pointed out, I don't make any money on BAT, it barely squeaks by. As it is, I have to spend money on things that don't always work for us.
I was hoping this forum program was going to work well for us.

I have one last thing to try, then I have to try other options.

Oh yeah, I guess I would be the half-wit of that story

Noticed the last couple of days, clicking on domestic resulted in an unending hourglass, but could get into other topic sites. LOL, not exactly sure why there is a domestic and import topic section, consider Chrysler to be an import now, foreign owned leaving just GM and Ford that are rapidly shutting down all domestic operations and moving to Canada to save a couple of bucks on health insurance and China to get components dirt cheap. Ha, just need an import topic.

Just a stupid suggestion on my part, this board is awfully slow, maybe Tim can open a passenger, truck, and transmission topic and let you guys park here until you get your problems resolved.

Would not be an issue to create a couple more categories for BAT to use temporary. But I thought it upset you to have to scroll down if there were to many listings?????

That's history, Tim, did replace my 8086 and converted black and white 10" TV set with one of those new fangled 3.5 GHz boxes with a high res monitor and even learned how to click on the tools box, select options and reduce the font size from a 36 down to a more reasonable 12.

I also replaced my live mouse that was trained to hit keyboard keys with a new dead scrolling mouse, so no problem scrolling down if I have to. Darn live mouse never could scroll correctly even with extra bits of cheese.

Believe Tony's code site is not part of the program, but what do I know? Anyway, folks with code questions never look at it anyway and want crunch to look it up for them.

Ha, I wonder if we have half-wits in Washington giving the energy companies huge tax breaks, suppose to hit the middle class, but my tax deductible energy bills were so high this last year, not going to pay very much taxes, so where are they going to get the money? Mileage rate dropped fours cents for the entire year, must have a short memory, gas was still three + bucks a gallon a couple of weeks before the November election. Oh well, not to worry, with 130 million added to our town assessment and a 1/2% increase in sales tax, property taxes still went up. Locals claim not getting back the few bucks we are sending to DC, so I guess our government won't go broke.

True it is a little slow this time of year. But I would rather be slow then busy being filled with smut posts!

Well, we have the forums working.
The programmers are finally admitting there is a problem with the program. What the problem is, they aren't exactly sure of yet.
They are disecting the program now to see where the problem is. Once they figure it out, then they will correct the problem and hopefully, that will be behind us.
For some reason, the Domestic forum code was hanging up on the server and wouldn't load.
I had to do some revision and make a new Domestic forum to try and correct part of the problem.
Unfortunately, that left the posts in the original Domestic forum unavailable until we get everything corrected.

Nick,
The trouble codes is on a seperate server.
Which is why it works when the forum won't.

You'd be surprised at how many people email us, because their Haynes manual says something different than the trouble codes site does and we all know that the Haynes manuals are correct in everything. Ha ha!

There was a time Bill, when you opened the main page of this site, no scroll bar appeared on the right, everything was there on one short page. But Tim got bored and added banners and more topics, so had to scroll down to see everything, teased Tim about that, LOL. Surprised Tim even remember that.

Is that the translation you wanted, Bill? Or is it this one:

"??? - ???????, ???, ????????????? ??????? ??? 8086 ? ???????????? ?????-????? 10" ??????????? ? ????? ?? ??? ????? fangled ??????? ?? 3.5 ??? ? ??????? ?????????(???????????) res ? ???? ?????, ??? ?????? ?? ??????? ????????????, ???????? ???????? ? ?????????(?????????) ?????? ?????? ?? 36 ???? ? ????? ???????? 12. ? ????? ??????? ??? ????? ????, ??????? ????????? ???????? ????? ?????????? ? ????? ??????? ???????????? ?????, ????? ??????? ??????? ????????, ???????????? ????, ???? ? ????, ?????. ?????? ????? ????, ??????? ?? ????? ?????????? ????????? ???? ? ??????????????? ??????(?????????) ????."

Most common problem programmers make is specifying a specific location to find something, it is ain't there in the exact spot, program will crash. Would be nice if all programmers used a variable directory and kept all of their crap in that one directory for good housekeeping, but in general, they are pretty sloppy, MS, Adobe, and Nortons are the three top worse ones, if not loaded under C:\Program Files, will crash and some use the same names for a .dll file all installed in the same systems directory that overwrites the one you need for another program that causes that program to crash. Feel they are succeeding in driving the rest of us nuts.

Haynes relies heavily on the owners manual for a reference, if you have anything more complicated than an empty fuel tank or low pressure in one of your tires, they tell you to take it to a dealer. Just like the owners manual states. Worthless, like that guy that followed Haynes and blew his air bag processor.

The forum programmers found the problem today and got it corrected.
Somehow, 1 post caused all the problems.
Don't know for sure what exactly the problem was, but they modified the post and all was well.

You know Nick reminds me of my late Father I could not live with him but I just could not live without him, so I have to like him no matter what he does or says he is a pretty smart whipper snapper unless he is goggling all of his responses, which by his answers if he is, at least he is scrambling up the words a little to make them look like an original.

That mess is due to a lack of a Russian language font with all those backwards letters they use, looked pretty good when I copied and pasted it, but Fusion has a mind of it's own. Have to say that MS Office 2003 is an excellent program for dealing with hundreds of different languages with both a grammar and spell checker for all the languages.

Ha, two of my sons are building new homes now and keep on coming to me for advice, don't know why, they argue about my advice, says their builder knows what they are doing, has a good reputation. so why do they keep coming back to me for advice?

One bit of advice they did follow was both have a 24 X 36 foot garage with a 16' and a 9' door, said dump the 16 and use three 9 foot doors, more vehicle spacing, more rigid construction and two nine foot doors are far cheaper than one 16 foot door, plus when you have problems, a lot easier to deal with a nine foot door. That they did follow, even had the plans in my computer that I forwarded to them for a much nicer look.

A bit of advice they did not follow was using insulated glass in lieu of argon filled windows, argued that the U and R values are the practically the same, but a single pane of glass does not leak out argon filling up with dirt and moisture like three of my windows have done after the twenty year warranty is up. Told them the only option the window companies give is to change the entire window at a huge expense, crazy. And what joker figured that two pieces of glass glued to an aluminum frame would last forever. One big difference is that the DOE gives a tax credit for argon, but not for insulated glass, but that is our government. Save a few cents on energy than have to pay thousands for a replacement.

Ha, told my one son on his plan with two bedrooms in the rear and two bathrooms and a laundry room in the front, if they would just flip that around would greatly shorten the plumbing runs as all would be in line with the kitchen directly over the utility room. Plan was symmetrical and the entry would be identical. No go on that, plan is very popular even with toilet drains draping across the downstairs rect room. One thing about the thousands of house plans out there, common sense was left out of the equation.

Ha, do what you want, I don't have to live there.
