New flu virus?

brickmason on Wed March 12, 2008 11:26 PM User is offline

Been talking with several folks this winter here in North Georgia who are getting the flu even after getting the flu shot ahead of time as they have normally done over the years with no problems.

Makes you wonder where things originate from.

Is this a common thing in the rest of the country?

This guy was on coast to coast last night. Made a lot of sense like why do we immunize a new born for Hep-c? If the only way to be infected is by sexual intercourse or a blood transfusion. Said 56 percent of doctors do no immunize their kids or take flu shots.

Influenza B they call it around here, not in epidemic proportions, but has been going around, no treatment, last about four days, take plenty of liquids. Thought I was coming down with it, cranked in some vitamin C and was okay the next day.

Glad I don't have anymore kids in that germ infested school, kids bring home every known ailment known to mankind.

The flu shot immunizes you against the strain or strains of flu that they expect to be prevalent during the upcoming flu season. Sometimes they are wrong. Some people come down with a virus and feel like crap for a few days, so they call it "the flu", even though it really isn't.

My company offers free flu shots to any employee that desires it. I had a bad sinus infection (airplane nose) when the nurse was here this season, so I passed on getting the shot.

I had bad experiences with flu shots over the years, one cause is that people do not how to give a flu shot by sticking the needle deep into the muscle that causes soreness for days and the other was administrating contaminated or poorly manufactured shots. That can make you feel ill for months.

The flu shot is suppose to be injected subcutaneously, meaning under the skin using a short needle at a 30* angle to your arm, had one idiot inject me with a long needle in my rotator cuff, that caused arm pain for a long time. Others stick it deep into the arm muscle. So I ask how they are going to give the shot before getting it, if I don't like what I hear, I give firm instructions, it's my body, some have told me they were giving shots for 30 years, don't mind telling them they were doing it wrong for 30 years.

Regarding safe shots, hit my doctor on that to get it from the same batch they give to the doctors, if I hear it's all the same, gives me more reason to bitch. Flu shots aren't made in the USA anymore, no profit in this profit oriented country and getting no flu shot is much better than getting a contaminated shot.

If you get the flu, the only thing that gets rid of it is the fever, have to burn those suckers out, so taking any medications to defeat the fever only lengthens the time you will have the flu. The line is drawn if your fever gets close to 105*F, that can burn out your brain cells, so that is the time to take something, aspirin or an Advil (ibuprofen), whichever your body can take. Doctors are pushing acetaminophen today, for me, more effective to take an M&M, least I am getting some nourishment and it taste a lot better.

Just like the common cold, no money in that either, only hope is to catch all 256 virus's, you never get catch a cold from the same virus type. What doesn't help the way our society is with the flu or the cold, just keep on going to school or to work and suffer it out, passing it to as many people that you can. And cold doesn't cause a cold, it's a virus that Nortons is worthless on treating.

Have to agree with you Nick on letting it run its course.
Took everything under the sun a couple months back which did no good whatsoever.

Dont know what I had but it was in my nose and throat, never made it to my chest, lasted 10 days.

Odd thing is from day one till it ended would feel like I was getting better one hour and start feeling just as bad or worse the next.

Caught it from my Uncle riding with him in his truck to feed his horses. Damn him!

Chick and everyone else who is sick, hope you all get well soon.

Just got a notice from my medical provider, use to call those doctors, that I need a Zoster shot that is suppose to be an immunization shot against shingles. So call back and say sure, I like getting shots.

But was warned first that this shot costs $225.00. 225 bucks! Would it be any cheaper if I just sent my arm in you stick the needle in it and send it back?

Do you have insurance? Yes, Medicare, VA, and under my wife's insurance. Do you still want the appointment? Hold off on it, let me check my insurance first.

Called Medicare first, they don't cover it, but my wife can get 500 bucks if I die. VA office was closed, was yesterday Donald Duck Day? So I called my wife's insurance company, we have the high deductible plan where the yearly deductible is still less than the full coverage plan and if we don't use it, still about $4,500.00 ahead, was told I would have to pay for this shot, okay, let me think it over. Gee, my flu shot was covered.

So I am in a state of ponder, was going to get on the net to learn the odds of getting shingles? But the phone rings, girl calls back from my wife's insurance, yes, this shot is 100% covered under the preventative maintenance portion of her plan, so I am going in this morning to get stuck. Just hope it's a good shot that prevents shingles and not one that causes it.

Learned again to check first before anything is done, we forgot about that a couple of months ago and got stuck with a 1,500 buck bill, it's not what your doctor nor dentist that determines what you need, it's your insurance company.

Ha, was in the VA office a couple of weeks ago, my good cholesterol is okay, bad is a tad high, but they keep on lowering the numbers each year. They have two pills for this, one can cause liver damage with no guarantees on reducing the risk of a heart attack or a stroke. The other is in debate by the FDA to take it off the market as it can cause death, just said, no thanks. Are you still taking that safety coated aspirin? No, it's burning my stomach and causing blood in my stools so quit that a long time ago. It's not suppose to do that. Well it does, even tried Bayer as opposed to these cheap brands. Still up in the air on this, left side is clear, only the right side is partially blocked and that is where I was really smacked hard in my accident, can you do some tests? We don't have the equipment so have to rely on your medical provider. Well call me when you have a pill that does reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke and doesn't cause liver damage. Still can't get a straight answer on my right neck artery, they haven't found cholesterol anywhere else and I should take a pill that causes liver damage?
