York NOS Compressor

Dave in Texas on Mon January 09, 2012 11:30 AM User is offlineView users profile

Posted question in AC Forum last week, but no responses. I figured experienced folk would know what NOS means, but maybe not? Anyway here is my post:
"Any reason to not trust an NOS York compressor that has been sitting for years/years? Fit would be for my '81 F100
Thanks"

I've bought many NOS parts before for both the truck and my car and never experienced any problem, but a compressor is different. Any compressor innards that would deteriorate over time?

Thanks for any advice/wisdom. I will appreciate it.

Dave

NOS

I dunno Dave, what's it look like?

Not to be a wise guy, but this is why no answers.

Seals (shelf life?), oils (shelf life?), rust?...

NOS=New Old Stock part. IOW: brand-new part sitting in stock at a dealership or in York stock somewhere and never bought. This particular York compressor was used on many Ford manufactured models for years/years. Thank you for the response!

Knew about NOS many moons ago, only a purist would pay extra for these parts when I was wasting my time restoring old cars.

Was great for all metal parts like bearings, engine, transmission, suspension, etc, but for leather or rubber, even rubberized gaskets, was better to cheat and buy reproductions. These parts were well greased and wrapped in a brown kind of heavy wax paper.

So is this York all greased and wrapped up like that? Price reasonable? If so major concern would be the gaskets and seal. Leather was used for such things as a water pump seal and like rubber, over time would dry out. Never would want to buy NOS weather stripping parts, would crumble in your hands.

Have to use your judgment and see what you are buying. Have friends restoring DC-3's, still plenty of parts around for this 1933-1946 aircraft thanks to WW II.

York 2 banger shaker comps are boxed w/arrows for proper storage direction to keep the seal immersed in oil (shaft pointed toward China) so that the seal faces will not rust during storage.

Took a chance and bought the R210L unit. Had 'New' tag on it and was a little dusty. Shaft turns with resistance. No telling how or in which direction it was stored over the years. The system will stay R12. I can't do much until I get my hoses back from Arizona. Any tips about checking the comp will be a help.

Thanks

Mind change. Original thought was to use existing clutch on nos compressor. Removed old unit and saw clutch had split ear on riveted spring. Rather than buy new clutch, bought reman compressor complete w/clutch & 2-yr warranty. Will find something to do with nos compressor, hopefully.

Will put the compressor on local Craigslist and in Ford Truck forum(FTE).
