Dave & George

I am negotiating a job in Casablanca that may take place the week of 27 October. One of my stipulations is that I get to spend a couple of days in the UK on the way back. Tentatively, that would put me in London the afternoon of November 1. This job was supposed to take place next week, but due to unforeseen circumstances, was delayed to 20 October at which time I will be on vacation in New Orleans, so I have proposed 27 October, which happens to coincide with the London to Brighton run. I won't know for sure for a week or so.

I was looking forward to seeing the 1875 steam carriage that was written up quite a bit from the 2000 run, but I was told it was a no show in 2001. I have misplaced my program, but attached is what was billed as the oldest vehicle in the run, at the finish line. It is definitely 1892, but I am not absolutely certain of the manufacturer. I was amazed also at the electric vehicles. One large truck with motors on the front wheels made it all the way on a single charge. It smelled like an electrical fire had taken place for hours after its arrival in Brighton. Not sure if there was any permanent damage done.

The second pic is my son on Brighton pier, to prove to the family that we were really there.

I was marshalling on one of the hills, when an electric car came up towards me. I couldn't hear the engine, and could see a pair of legs walking behind, so I assumed someone was pushing. As I approached the driver to ask him if he needed a tow, I realised it was electric, and the legs behind belonged to a big fat guy, who wasn't pushing, but had just got off to lighten the load. It got to the top of the hill under its own steam, and the fat guy jumped back on. It's all downhill from there, so maybe they used the electric motor to put back some charge into the batteries.
