Wayward bumper

Mitch on Sat November 08, 2003 8:51 PM User is offline

Year: 1987
Make: Olds
Model: 88
Engine Size: 3.8 L
Refrigerant Type: R12
Ambient Temp: 80F

A couple of weeks ago when the fires were going big time, I posted a pic of our friend's house that burned to the ground and said that she barely escaped, and had ripped the rear bumper off her car in her haste to get away. Turns out it was the front bumper that caught a post as she swung out of her carport and initially it was pulled halfway off and dragging on the ground. About a mile away where it was a little calmer, two guys yanked the bumper off the rest of the way so it wouldn't foul the wheels and threw it on the side of the road. I checked on a used bumper and found one for $200, but had not gotten around to actually getting one.

The original bumper magically appeared Thursday on the driveway of her burned out home and today I put it back on with the help of a MIG welder and a 5# hammer. It looks pretty good!

I checked the AC while I was at it. It has a piccolo condenser 28 x 15.5 and one electric fan that covers only half of the condenser. It was low on gas, so I put about a pound of R12 in it using the GM hand feel quick check method. At idle, 80F ambient on inside air, the vent temp was 35F. On the road, when it cycled, the vent was 39F.

Where is she staying with her home burnt down? When I first came up to farm country, quickly learned that every farmer owned a welder and was the most popular repair tool. Some would get carried away, those tractors take a beating, and a bolt or nut would fall out, rather than replacing the bolt, the welder came out, ha, that made future repairs a bit miserable, even saw a steering wheel welded onto the shaft not to mention all of the linkages.

You got me to thinking of when was the last time I had to pull a front bumper for reasons other than a fender bender where other things had to be replaced as well. It was on my 1970 Rivera, and the reason for that as I also had to remove the right front fender. Why? To replace the blower motor.

Ha, an 87 Olds, least you had something to weld to, if that car was here, would be nothing left of it. GM rust.

Thanks Frank, that's what friends are for. I hope to be in as good a shape and as active when I'm 80.

She has been staying at a another friend's place who is currently on vacation. That place was near the fires too and was without power for a week. Next week she will be moving to an apartment and plans on rebuilding her home.

The Olds is rust free. Still good transportation, it only has 107K on the clock.
