Konica 2020 copy machine developer.

NickD on Sun March 07, 2004 6:52 AM User is offline

My copy machine with only 12,000 on the counter starting dumping toner all over the insides and smearing the copies with black smears. I removed the cartridge, vacuumed it out and cleaned it installing new toner. Now it doesn't work. In researching the web, besides the toner they are saying something about adding a developer, a large plastic package of some very black looking stuff, but can't find where to add it. The little manual that came with the copier doesn't even mention developer. Anyone ever deal with this? Lots of sites offer this bag of developer for precisely the Konica 2020. Learning something new, never had any reason to fool with this thing until now.

Yes, it used to be fairly common, Nick. Most of the time the newer ones have cartridges so you don't need to handle the stuff.

What an education I got yesterday, I remember an old employee of mind has been working as a copy machine repairman for the last 25 years. Had to really concentrate to remember his name.

He doesn't know why they call that other black powder developer, and I didn't know it was a mixture, the owners manual doesn't even touch on the subject. He says it's iron filings that is used a a medium on a magnetic drum to carry the toner from it's container to the drum. He also told me I could have a burnt out light bulb for the charge removal, something else to check. Says they are using LED's now. I checked on the net, $40.00 bucks for a bag of Konica developer, was lucky, found a the same bag on ebay yesterday when the auction was just closing and got it for $2.00.

He told me the code sequence to set up the copier so it goes into an automatic mix mode and how to add the developer, it all makes sense now and the stuff I got off of ebay was correct. So see what happens. I was mystified as to why some toner was sticking to that "magnetic drum" and why others could easily be vacuumed off. I could find nothing on the web on this subject. Learned something new yesterday, LOL.
